I'm English and live in london- i think i have found the ultimate student health food. LENTILS. we get them ready to eat (cold) in veggie stock, in cans of 195g (drained) the nutritional facts are (per 100g) 10g carbs (0.2 sugars) 5g protein and 2g of fibre.

just thought i would share. are they the king of the pulses?

I absolutely love lentils (and beans, too). But, I can eat too many in a sitting, too easily, so I really have to watch it and only dole out the amount I'm supposed to have at the time.

But, you are right about them, they are probably one of the best sources for healthy carbs available.

Lentils are a lot easier to cook yourself, too. They require no soaking, like most other legumes. Split peas are another good one. No soaking there, either.

Both lentils and peans can go from dry to soup in an hour and a half. Possibly the easiest soups to make, too.

Good call Pooky, lentils are something we should all regularly eat. Great for low-GI carbs and fiber.
