hey guys,

am i not eating enough?

for breakfast, i have a carnation instant breakfast and at lunch i'll have a small bag of candy cause i'm never hungry. When i get home, for dinner, i'll either have a sandwich or something like chicken or pasta, etc. But, when i do have dinner, i never finish it: i'll eat like half of a small portion to begin with. i guess i'm just not a hungry kid.

is there something wrong with this?

kick your metabolism up a notch. eat 6 small meals a day, and try to avoid sugar in those meals. instead of carnation instant breakfasts, buy some whey protein and look up some recipes to blend up your breakfast if you insist on drinking your breakfast (though, 100% non-instant whole grain oatmeal (in the cylinders) is best with a protein source i.e eggs, cottage cheese etc.) then have a midmorning snack to keep your blood sugars stable and keeping you away from eating candy. good choices here would be an apple with peanut butter, nonfat yogurt if your school sells it, or a bag of mixed nuts. when i was in school i just took trail mix (nuts with some m/ms since I too had a sweet tooth). try reading the post on adam's diet, or buy the abs diet book for a guideline on healthy foods you should eat, and why you should eat them. good luck!

my problem is that during the school year, i can't eat 6 small meals a day. and i only have the instant breakfasts because 1) i'm not really awake at 5:30/5:45 in the morning when i eat breakfast 2) i'm never hungry

i do plan to get some whey protein in the near future.

my school doesn't allow eating in between classes...unless u stand in ur locker and at 5'10" and with my build, that ain't possible plus my lunch isn't until 12:10.

during the summer, i will be able to eat the 6 small meals a day

get up 15 minutes earlier and eat a real breakfast.

have a real lunch.

eat again when school ends.

have dinner.

eat before you go to bed.

there... that's 5 meals.

wear cargo pants to school and put a ziplock bag of almonds in your pockets. eat'em in between classes, in the bathroom, whenever you get a chance. if i was able to find a way to get stoned in school without getting caught, you should be able to eat a handful of nuts now and then.

how do you have 300+ posts and don't know that your diet totally sucks?

1) this started happening about, maybe 2 weeks ago or so. i all of a sudden, just wasn't as hungry. before that, i ate a real breakfast, had a real lunch and came home and had a somewhat normal dinner (sometimes sit-down at the table; other times, brown paper bag dinner up in my room.

2) i go to a catholic school and wear a uniform. But, i'll try to stick a bag of almonds in my locker and grab some here and there.

3) I can't eat right after school because i get out at 2:55 and i have to be dressed and ready for practice by 3. and with all the sprints and stuff we do, you don't wanna eat right before practice. But i could probably grab a chewy bar or something like that and put it in my bag for right after practice.

So now i'd have:

real breakfast (cereal or oatmeal or maybe some eggs)

real lunch: sandwich, salald, water bottle, and 100% fruit juice-good for you-fruit snacks, not the crap loaded with sugar-the ones that welshes makes that are made of natural stuff.

some nuts between classes

chewy bar or small snack after practice

small dinner

small snack before bed

does this sound ok? luckily, i have today off cause there is no electricity at my school thanks to the storm , so i'll start today with this. thanks for helpeing me actually change this. I knew what i was doing wasn't the best, but i guess i got my grandfather's stubbornness

How hard are your b-ball practices? Are you feeling more tired and run down throughout the day?

Loss of appetite is often a symptom of overreaching or at the more extreme end overtraining. Are you lifting weights as well? If it's a recently occuring thing, try drinking more water throughout the day and getting more sleep. Might help kickstart the appetite. Also, try to minimize stress. Overreaching can be alright for periods of time to improve athletic performance, but overtraining is very bad news.

But yeah, at 14 definitely get that appetite back up. You're still growing and definitely don't want to stunt that with inadequate nutrition.

it's not that our bball practices are that hard, like i can do all the drills and all, it just a lot of sprints and jumping exercises to improve conditioning. When i'm done with bball, i definitely feel tired, but on top of bball, i'm taking all honors class, plus our huge midterms are just around the corner and we have these two huge projects to work on: 1 for the end of 3rd quarter and the other for the end of the year: so every second i'm not playing basketball or in school, i'm doing homework, when i'm done with homework, i'm studying, and when i'm done studyin for the day, i'm working on the project. and when i need a mental break, i come here

Unfortunately, that has equalled me going to bed around 11 frequently and then jumping out of bed about 10 minutes before the bus comes. So that's probably why i haven't been eating a solid breakfast.

Because of my schedule i haven't been lifting. I haven't lifted regularly or heavy since the beginning of the school year. I've done bodyweight exercises and we do some strength drills in practice, but i haven't been lifting because i didn't want it to interfere with my bball performance and i didn't want bball to interfere with my lifting performance.

i'll start drinking more water, i haven't been very good at that lately. i can't really minimize stress right now, but i have a feeling that at noon on Thursday the 27th, when exams are over, there'll be a LOT less stress.

thanks guys

Kevin-Beleive me, we all have busy scedules(just wait to yo get to college). If you you truly wanted to workout you would find 45min-60min in your day to do so. Stop with the excuses bud...sorry to be so harsh but I am just stating the truth.

i know you're stating the trust and no hard feelings here. trust me, i've had family friends who are pretty well off right now tell me that what i'm doing now is as busy or busier than their college schedule. they were in the honors program in a academically well-respected catholic high school and were working as much as i am now. They told me that college was exactly the same. and wit 4 cousins in it and 1 startin next year, i know college is busy.

its not that i don't want to work out- i love lifting. its just with practice everyday and then up to 3 games a week, i don't want to be wiped out for my games and have my play suffer. also, school does come first for me-i'm relying on school to get into college. we do tons of strength and conditioning stuff in practice, so i'm still working my muscles and i'm still in shape. And being the lightest "big guy" at 150 when all the other ones are over 15-20 pounds heavier than me and 3 of them are 195+ pounds, i get a good workout musclin with them inside the key. i have the same feeling in my muscles after a good practice that i do after a good lifting session. i know i'm getting stroner, not necessarily bigger, but stronger.

again, no hard feelings. i want to work out so bad, just right now, its not a feasible thing for me to do. i want to find a way to fit some lifting back into my schedule after midterms are over and i plan to do so. just right now, with basketball, school, tests, project, hw, midterms, etc. i just can't. i don't like to use that word a lot, but this time, i've tried to find time to lift but i haven't been successful. i hope to turn that around in the near future.
