Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
Just read most of the book today and I want to make sure I'm on the right track.
FYI, I'm 21, 145lbs, I work as an apprentice carpenter framing houses most of the time and doing odds and ends the rest, so I definately get my exercise. I just recently quit smoking and decided that if I quit doing all the bad things I might as well do the right things. One thing I definately need in my line of work is more weight. A longer term goal for me would be to reach at least 165-170lbs.
Most of the Nutrient Timing book talks about what to consume during your workout which is short compared to my daily exercise requirements which last from about 6:45a to 4:00p, with an hour lunch. I haven't figured out what my daily expenditure is exactly, so I'll just eat right and see where it goes from there.
Here's my daily plan for this week, please let me know what you think:
Breakfast
2 boiled eggs
1 cup oatmeal
couple swiggs of gatorade w/ protein powder
Snack
Johnka's Mixed Nut Bar
1 Apple
Lunch
Steak
1 1/2 twiced baked potatoe with cheese
Corn
Snack
1 cup trail mix
1 can of tuna, mayo, and jalapenos (seriously doubt I'll eat all of it, it is 2.5 servings)
1 banana
Dinner
No clue
8:30 snack
a serving of 2% cottage cheese
w/an apple I guess
Other than that,
My breakfast, and all the snacks will remain the same throughout the week, only changing what's for lunch and dinner.
How's that for a beginner?
Also, what do you guys think about multi-vitamins for someone beginning a nutrition regimine?
And someone like myself, who is constantly going throughout the day, should I sip on gatorade and protein powder all day, wouldn't that screw with my insulin resistance? I usually go up to tom thumb and get a 44oz 3/4 sweetened 1/4 unsweetened tea to get me through the 2nd half of the day. Don't know if I can deal with gatorade all day, it never quenches the thirst.
How much weight would the average person expect to gain per week on a diet such as this? like a lb/week?
I'd appreciate any feedback,
Thanks.
That diet look pretty good to me and I think it's great that you are eating carbs throughout the day to keep your energy levels up, considering your line of work you need it. One suugestion I have is to add more veggies.
Also, where are your pre/post workout meals? Do you have a shake?

IMHO stay away from liquid gatorade cus it has HFCS in the ingredients...not very good stuff. Stick with water if you wanna sip on a shake all day(or milk but that could go bad if not kept cold).
In order to figure out if you will gain weight on that diet you should figure out how many calories that diet consists of. Then figure out your matience number of calories per day(the amount of calories you need to eat to mantain your weight). Finally, add 250-500 calories to your matienence calorie number and see if you are gaining consuming that amount of calories per day. If not adjust. Hope this helps.
Are you counting your work as a workout? You shouldn't be doing that, if you are. You live an active lifestyle, but the Nutrient Timing book describes different phases built around intense daily exercise/weight training. I get the impression that you're treating your actual work as the energy phase, which it's not. So please clarify things for me.
If you are not weight training, my guess would be that you're day would be treated as the sustained segment of the growth phase.
A daily multi-vitamin is helpful, but it may not be needed if you're obtaining the proper amount of vitamins through your diet. I recommend one though, just to be sure you receiving adequate amounts.
When you say you have no idea for supper, what sort of things might you typically eat here?

Do you mean the pre-packaged liquid verses making your own from water and the gatorade powder? [/quote]Yes, the liquid that comes in bottles. Gatorade powder(that you mix with water to make liquid) ins fine.
