I am 25, female, 27% body fat. 185 pounds. This is 135 pounds of muscle & 50 pounds of fat. My goal is 18% body fat, which means I need to lose 9% body fat. But I'm not doing the calculations correctly because to lose 9% of the 185 is only approx. 17 pounds. I'm confused. Could someone help me figure this out? I want to know according to my current stats, if muscle mass were to remain the same, how many pounds to I need to lose to be 18% body fat?

You would have to get to 164 lbs. Fat would be 29 lbs.

What % of muscle to fat is lost during a cutting program? I was told 25% of every pound lost is muscle, & the other 75% is fat. So if thats true, I will need to lose 25 total pounds. (approx)

If you follow a proper cutting program (Ie. use exercise, not just diet) you won't lose any muscle and in fact, will also gain a bit

try http://www.mensfitness.com/fitness/22

If you go for a pure diet cutting program, then yeah you will lose some muscle but for a mere 30 minutes every other day, it's really worth it to just put the exercise in, keep/gain muscle and thus keep your metabolism up/increase metabolism

I would try to lose it slower than over 2 months. If you lose too fast you will lose more muscle than you would want to. Your diet and workout routine will need to be strict if you want to accomplish this. JP had good results at with Adam's diet (listed at the top of this section) and there are a lot of good routines listed in the fitness FAQ section.

Good luck.

I'm doing a light version of Atkins, i.e., no carbs/sugar except for 2 cups of veggies. And I allow myself aspartame which is strictly forbidden on Atkins.

I do 30 minutes of cardio 5 days a week. I actually wouldn't mind losing a bit of muscle in the process. I have bulked too much & my quads & shoulders are bigger than I wanted.

Make sure you read Adam Campbell's post on his died.. modify your Atkins enough so that you get enough carbs so you don't force your body into ketosis. Also, cutting carbs means cutting fiber. Make sure you get enough somehow.

Thanks Bo. Adam's diet looks like something I'd like.

On his died? Wow I spel goot!

Yeah I'm on it right now and it's not hard to follow. Only hard part is I get carb cravings and I know a stick of cheese won't help but I grab a small apple or some berries (good source of fibre btw) and that kills it
