Question

I've got a question guys...

I just bought the cereal All Bran from the store because of it's low GI(38) and even lower II(32). However, upon looking at the ingredients I see that it has 8 grams of sugar per serving and High Fructose Corn Syrup as an ingredient. I am assuming almost, if not, all of that sugar content is due to the HFCS. Basically, I'm asking if it's still alright to chow down on this bad boy even with the HFCS.

Personally, I try to stay away from anything with HFCS. It depends on how strict you are with your diet. Maybe get Fiber One cereal instead. Off the top of my head it has 2g of sugar and IMO it tastes really good.

all bran extra fiber has 0 grams of sugar and it has way more fiber. HFCS is still listed in the ingredients but it must be minimal if it does not contribute even 1 gram of sugar. I mix all bran extra fiber with another low carb cereal and have a fiber packed breakfast.

I'm not really a fan of processed cereals, and besides, I love oats.

Personally, I don't think HFCS is all that bad when you know it's there and you know what it does. It's not like a trans fat where it does actual damage, long term.

HFCS is just a very inexpensive sugar that fails to stimulate your body so that it feels full after you eat or drink it. In sodas, etc. it is bad, because it does absolutely nothing to fill you up, whereas a soda sweetened with true sugar would make you feel full pretty quickly.

If you're ever in a specialty food or drink store that carries Coke (or other type of soda) from Mexico, you can do an experiment. Last time I checked Mexican Coke still used true sugar. Check the label. If it's still sugar (azucar), buy two bottles (they should be only 12oz). Two 12oz bottles of Coke should go down pretty easy, right? But, after the first one, I'd be surprised if you would want the second bottle. You should feel full.

With American Coke, the HFCS keeps you from feeling full and/or sick, so you CAN drink the whole 20oz (not 12oz) bottle and keep going.

I used to wonder how, in the olden days, people could be satisfied with the tiny bottles of soda. In those days, they started at 7oz and 12oz bottles were often shared.

But, it's still just empty calories. A little shouldn't hurt.

I like Fiber One, too. But, not as much by itself. I add it to other, less fibery cereals, like Total Protein.

The whole Mexican Coke thing really explains a lot in terms of why we Americans can drink soda after soda. It's yet another piece in the puzzle of why our country is so fat; thanks for the insightful info. I am going to try Mexican coke next time I go to Mexico and see what happens.

I've been told that Mexican Coke is big here in Chicago with the Latino communities. I don't drink coke so I can't offer any reviews vs. American Coke.

It pays to watch for HFCS in sports drinks, too. Gatorade doesn't use HFCS, but PowerAid uses HFCS as it's sweetener.

I don't really drink ready to drink sports drinks, except in an "emergency," but I stick to Gatorade when I do.

When I go to a Mexican joint with the kids, I let them have some of the Mexican drinks in the bottles. Most have no HFCS. They rarely finish them, but they can down several Sprites without blinking.
