Question

I know that peanuts are technically legumes, not nuts. I was under the impression that peanuts are still quite good for you. But now I'm not so sure. I've seen research suggesting that almonds are good for you, and legumes (er, beans) are packed with good protein.

My problem is that I have a horrible sweet tooth, and since I work for a convenience store (in the corporate office, which is attached to a store), every kind of sugar-laden goodness is just a few steps away. Trying to get away from that, I decided to buy some peanuts and leave them on my desk (instead of going for the King Size Snickers or Krispy Kreme doughnut at the store ). Is that thinking right, or am I just fooling myself?

Peanuts can definitely be incorporated into a healthy diet. They're a good source of monounsaturated fat. But it's good to shoot for variety - walnuts have omega-3's that peanuts don't. Also, it's easy to overindulge on peanuts and get 1000 extra calories that you may not need.

I was wondering, as well. A couple of Berardi articles list nuts as good, but specifically say "not peanuts." Obviously, they aren't really nuts, but I don't think THAT was why Berardi excluded them.

Is it just that other "nuts" and seeds have more value? I've read that almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds each have specific health benefits associated.

I try to get a variety. Walnuts, almonds, and pumpkin seeds are my staples, but peanuts and peanut butter are so easy to get everywhere that I end up eating some pretty much every day.

That's for sure. It's happened already - I'm sitting at my desk, grazing in the peanut jar. Next thing I know, I've eaten 4 or 5 ounces of peanuts. @ 170 calories per ounce, that's alot of calories that I'm not getting back. (Still beats the King Size Snickers bar - 510 calories, and pretty much zero nutritional value).

So maybe a jar of mixed nuts would work out better? Almonds, walnuts, peanuts, cashews, etc. I wasn't a big fan of peanuts, but I got used to them and I enjoy them now. I'll have to do the same with the others, too.

I think JB listed them in an intermediate category because of allergins. Peanuts can cause both serious and mild problems for people - in that respect walnuts are much better.

For myself, peanuts/ peanut butter are on the menu when bulking and off the menu when cutting.

Peanuts are better than Snickers bars, but why don't you pack a mixture of nuts for dietary variety and flavors.

Almonds contain a a lot of monounsaturated fat, which is great for reducing bad cholesterol and raising good cholesterol.

Walnuts are chock full of omega-3 fatty acids.

It's a good idea to have quarter-cup or so of each every day.

I know I already posted that link somewhere, but it is my favorite nuts link, hope it helps read about nuts and decide which ones to do. Me and my immediate circle of workout friends eat raw almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts alternately every day.

Hey galya, great link! Thank you for posting that - very informative. Now if only I could find nuts that taste like ice cream!?

Not doubting the healthfulness of nuts but....

I believe the guy on that wrote that article, in addition to having recently died of a stroke, received his "graduate" degree in Naturopathy from the Canadian Alternative Medicines Research Institute (the link to which is also dead). I apologize if I am disrepecting a well known expert, but his email is a hotmail account.

In another article he claims that saturated fats aren't stored as adipose tissue so you don't have to worry about gaining weight from them, but that its monounsaturated fats you have to watch out for.

I'm not a nutritionist, I can't evaluate those claims with any expertise, but they motivate me to double check all the info he provides on nuts.
