Despite my goal to put on some mass, I "need" to have 1-2 days of anaerobic activity in my routine. I don't really need it for health or anything. I just keep getting interested in fun sounding obstacle runs, sand challenges, etc. and want to be ready and able to keep up.

So, would I be better off upping my calorie average on a daily basis to make up the calories burned or increasing them on the day of the cardio activity? Or, a combination of both?

I've been making sure to eat enough before the cardio so hopefully I'm not eating up too much muscle. Each "session" is really only about 30 minutes. Occasionally, I take a 5k "run," but to limit my steady-state running when possible.

Any advice?

If you know you are going to do it and its a regular things, go ahead and up the calories a bit every day so you don't have to stuff yourself really often. If its unpredicatble when you will do the runs or only once or twice a week, just eat more on those days. A shake after then another protein and carb meal will add quite a few cals.

I agree with DKing. I'd say that eating a few more hundred cals (depending on the level and duration of the activity) on those days you do the anaerobic activities, you should be fine.

I think its definitely possible for anyone who is bulking to maintain their anaerobic activities and still see gains. The key is to make sure you compensate for that activity by eating more. Ideally, these extra cals (protein and carbs)should be before, and also the few hours after the activity to help you recover the quickest and prevent any muscle loss from the catabolic state your body will be in.
