It's kind of weird what I think of when I first wake up sometimes... it's like where'd that come from??? Anyway, this morning first thing, I was thinking about my student job when I was an undergrad working on the campus production horticulture farm. We'd grow big fields of stuff like watermelons, cateloupes, etc., take sugar samples from them, and then start eating. I lived off what we took out of the field to some degree and gave a lot away. In terms of the fruits though, the goal of the field trials was to find fruits with higher sugar content. The higher the sugar, the more desirable and the more favorable the review. I'm sure this has lead to the fruit we eat - probably across the board - to be much higher in sugar content than the same kinds of fruit that our ancestors ate. So, even when we are eating something "healthy," we may, in fact, still be getting more simple sugers in our diets than our bodies are prepared for.

I did a quick GOOGLE search and HERE'S ONE ARTICLE I FOUND. It doesn't say it, but I can tell this is a Christian Finn article because it gives you just a little but then says you can't read the rest unless you join up (= pay) .. which is fine... we all need to make a living.

Neat story Q - were you dealing mostly with melons? Did you put on any weight with a high-fruit diet?

No, it WAS my food, not in addition to my food. We also grew tomatoes, peppers, onions... lots of stuff to go with the fruit.

I have this great story to tell my grandchilden about living on $80/month for a while in college... that includes room and board! My rent was $50/mo for my garage appartment with no insulation (in Lubbock!) My car was broke, as was I, so I rode my bike everywhere. I ate what I took home along with just the little bit I bought from the store. Nope, didn't gain any extra weight then. Plus, I played basketball frequently as well as working in the farm so I was burning off plenty!

That's where I learned about dried apricots, too. There was an apricot orchard there that was going to get dozed for a new building. I was able to collect sacks and sacks of apricots but didn't know what to do with them all so I built a drying rack out of hardware cloth and old 2x4's and made dried apricots out in the sun. I ate those for a while and developed a taste for them. When I ran out, that's when I learned how much they cost to buy!

Man, I thought I used to be frugal! But I guess $50/month rent is about right for real estate in Lubbock

Good idea for the dried apricots. One summer in Jordan I dried some tomatoes in the sun on top of our villa. Good stuff.
