Although I'm diligent about planning my 4 - 6 meals throughout the day, i'll occasionally have to rely on a meal replacement bar.

I usually go with Met RX if it's a lifting day, but if it's not a lifting day, what do you guys recommend? I'm watching my carbs (except pre and post workout) so that's a consideration.

I think it probabaly comes down to the lesser of evils. Any suggestions/recommendations are appreciated.

Well, personally, I love Met-Rx Big 100s.....but if you're watching carbs, that's probably NOT the way to go.

If I remember correctly, Johnka approved the Big 100, as long as you're carefull with the high carb count.

I admit I'm addicted to protein bars myself, but in reality I should quit, as I can see the negative effects that it has on my gains.

WorkinOnit,
Here are my reviews for a couple of bars, which Fayman referred to:

http://people.smu.edu/jowillia/consu...otein_bars.htm

Like you, I'm frustrated with the lack of bars to eat outside of the PWO window. Tri-O-Plex bars taste great, but their labels are misleading (i.e., have a lot more sugar and less protein than they claim).

Anyway, if you want to make some homemade bars, I made some recipes modeled after tri-o-plex:

Peanut Butter Banana Bars

And S'mores Bars: http://people.smu.edu/jowillia/ recipes/s'mores_bars.htm

I go with the big 100s as well. They seem to have the least amount of soy protein in them. The carbs are pretty high though if that's what you are worried about. The Chocolate Chip Cookie Doughs are awesome...

Hey John:

I was prompted to make this post after i went to the snack room downstairs at work and, instead of buying my usual Met-RX Protien Plus, I seached thru the dozens of other bars and got a Detour bar (the c/p/f profile looked good and i was trying to find a lower carb bar for my non-lifting day).

I got back to my office, bit into it and almost spit it out--it was so sweet i could barely swallow it, thinking holy crap, this must be all sugar--next, the hideous after-taste set in.

Then the lightbulb lite up and i remembered to consult with the oracle (your site!).

I guess the only answer is to apply the same discipline that i use in lifting to cooking: I need to make a batch of your bars on Sunday to have ready for the coming week.

Still, i'm open to anyone suggestions / recommendations for pre-made bars, just in case. . .

I'm guilty of eating a premade bar every single (week)day. The lessor of a million evils I've found to be Labrada's Lean Body - Cookies n Cream:

http://www13.netrition.com/lean_body_bars_page.html

Not exactly ideal, but I don't see myself baking protein bars every week...
