Question

Ok my second post! I Have been reading lots of info on weight traing and the second major componet of weight training is diet! So how should one go about starting a Diet to weight train to lose weight and gain muscle?? From what I have read You want a Calorie Deficit! i.e. less calories than you burn! Many recomend 6 smaller meals a day as upposed to 3 large meals? The Use of whey Protein?? Can any one recomend an easy to use program or how to build one that is not complicated? How to mix it up so it does not get boring and you fall off. How should one count calories grams of fat carbs. Etc. Please help shed some light on this topic. Thanks John

You sound like you are one the right track to start. I would go with around 4-6 meals a day, whatever fits your schedule. Keep it at about a 500 calorie deficit each day. If you want a good book that sumarizes an excellent diet check out the Testosterone Advantage Plan by Lou Schuler and the guys at Mens Health. Lou posts here sometimes and is an awesome guy. Plus he put together an awesome book with a great diet plan and a good workout. I bought it for my dad for his last birthday and he loves it. The diet isn't extreme, is meant to spare muscle on a diet and has plenty of examples of meals.
If you want to track what you are eating, check out www.fitday.com. Its got a pretty complete food listing and makes dieting much easier.
A good way to start out is to slowly cut out bad things and replace them with better foods. Its how I start back clean eating if I haven't been for a while. Like cut out sugary drinks for a week, then the next week work on getting rid of the fast food. Just don't drop it all at once, it will lead to terrible cravings and be a huge shock to your system.

"What does anyone know or have to say about the use of whey protein? The why, how and what for???"

Whey digests more quickly than most other proteins, so it is optimal for post-workout nutrition. It's not too expensive if you do a little research.

I'd recommend it for a post-workout shake (along with other things), though solid foods should be the way for the rest of your day.

Those were very interesting and informative articles. Did John Berardi ever post what brand or type of whey proteen to use? I like the fact that the article states that what was in developement was a natural sourse of proteen with out any bad additives? More information on those articles would be appreciated! Thanks John

I thought of another question? Should you Eat before A work out? I'm think you probalbly should or wouldnt you be burning muscle as well as fat because your body does not have any fuel to burn during work out? Also If im thinkig corectly what should one consume prior to working out/ lifting? I know from reading the articles that the protein shakes help with muscle building and recovery post work out but what about before? Thanks John
