If skim milk is a large part of my daily eating and drinking, will it slow me down when it comes to running for football? We started summer workouts this morning (one word: day-um) and it includes running lots of sprints and other endurance exercises after we lift. I would love to get faster over the summer as well as stronger, and I was wondering if drinking a lot of milk (skim) everyday will slow me down. Thanks for any replies.

I don't know much, but I don't see any reason as to why it would slow you down other than your lactose intolerant and it gives you pains...

No.

Skim milk, barring the lactose thing, should only help.

I know milk is good in terms of working out, seeing as it has protein and other goodies, but are y'all sure it won't slow down my sprints?

I'm not sure I know why you suspect that it would.

Do you mean if you drink it right before you run? In that case, I guess a stomach full of milk might not sit well during a sprint...???

Otherwise, don't worry about it!

I think that milk takes a long time to digest. So if you're going to drink it, I'd suggest doing it after you workout.
I don't drink milk, instead I drink soymilk which according to label has the same amount of calcium and vitamins and doesn't give me a stomach ache.

the protein in milk is cassein protein which takes medium length to digest. Iso whey sources are quick acting digesting and soy sources are longer acting digesting. Most body builders take a blend of the three to continuously have a significant amount of protein available throughout the day for protein synthesis and for the prevention of catabolism.

So what were you eating after you stopped with the junk? I'm fascinated by metabolism, etc.

So do you do much free-weight stuff, or does your day provide enough exercise?

Personally, I had to greatly reduce my dairy intake, especially while running hard or sustained efforts (tempo runs, hill repeats, sprints). The reason is that, for some people, dairy products cause more phlegm and mucus to be produced, which can affect breathing. This only happens in part of the population, but, since switching to soy milk, I've noticed a big difference in performance.

The reason Sarah mentioned is the same reason that speakers are advised not to drink milk prior to a presentation. It creates more phlegm and the subsequent coating on the vocal cords doesn't allow for as much clarity.

I think it all depends on how one handles milk. I seem to handle it just fine.

When I was doing a 10-week conditioning blitz last year, I followed the zone diet (to drop weight). I did a little weight training, but mostly did hard running and calesthenics (lots of pushups, in particular).

In that context, I drank 2% milk two to three times a day; it fit the zone meal/snack profile of P/C/F. I drank it a pre and post workout nutrition. I made great progress. Easily lost the weight. Physical conditioning went really well.

Try it. If it works, I think it's a great food. If not, then not.
