* A study involving more than 145,000 predominantly white, middle-aged or elderly adults showed that taking multivitamins for more than 10 years seems to protect again colon cancer. So far, no such effect has been seen among those who began to take multivitamins more recently. Results were published in the Oct. 1, 2003, issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.
* A study in China found that high blood levels of alpha-tocopherol, a form of vitamin E, appear to protect against stomach and esophagus cancer. Results were published in the Sept. 17, 2003, issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
* A 30-year study involving more than 7,000 men suggested that a daily magnesium intake of 340 mg or more reduces the risk of heart disease. Among those with the highest magnesium intake, the rate of heart disease was about four cases per 1,000 persons per year - compared to seven cases per 1,000 among those with the lowest magnesium intake. Results were published in the September 2003 issue of the American Journal of Cardiology.
