I've never had any Biotest product other than Spike because it's so expensive and I hate ordering things online, but I've heard a lot of good (and some bad) things about Surge. I use the homemade version by using whey and Gatorade (which is delicious), and I was wondering if anybody had tried to make a homemade Surge Workout Fuel drink? What would it be? Just gatorade plus BCAAs?

For home-made Workout Fuel, you need the following items:
There's beta-alanine w/o the tingle effect. All it needs is an extra vitamin.
Palatinose is a great carb source, but it's indeed very pricey. We had it way before Biotest and had to sell it below the cost margin as nobody ever heard from it (and what people don't know, they don't buy w/o a pimping site like T-nation)
Palatinose is awesome when you dislike the dips & surges of regular glucose. Taking ordinary sucrose or maltodextrine will solve that problem.
The major advantage of palatinose is the really low glycemic index as well as it being tooth friendly, a bonus for people who use it for endurance runs/rides. So, that's about the only real selling point of it: less tooth decay with higher intakes. If you were a prediabetic runner/cyclists, I'd recommend it.. but NOT as the product you're mentioning.
The problem with products that are like 'everything but the kitchen sink' is that to get the amounts right, it will become ridiculously expensive OR it will be underdosed.
People won't buy very expensive stuff, unless it's pimped to death ... or they are fooled into believing that underdosed things are the greatest thing.
Be smart and take predominantly supplements that don't have too many components in them. Stay way clear of anything that has the label on it 'proprietary blend' as it reeks of deception. We never ever used that term, nor does the company from whom we are buying.
