Default Is my low-carb yogurt unhealthy? I've included the ingredients/nutritional breakdown+

I think the sucralose and aceesulflame potassium are artificial sweetners but is that real bad? I have a hard time closing the gap in my protein needs (152 g!) so I'd like to eat as much as possible (3 cups a day).

Ralphs Carb Master Yorgurt (6 oz.)
Calories - 80
Fat - 1.5
Sodium - 80
Potassium - 90
Carbs - 4
Fiber - 1
Sugar - 3
NET Carbs - 3
Protein - 12

Ingredients: water, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, cream, modified cornstarch, glycerine, natural and artificial flavor, salt, gelatin, tricalcium phospate, malic acid, phosphoric acid, pectin, agar, sodium citrate, sucralose, acesulflame potassium, annato and tumeric extract (for color), vitamin A palminate, vitamin D3, and active cultures with L Acidophillus and B. Bifidum.

Mouthful, i know. Thanks :-)

4 oz chicken breast will give you the same amount of protein (as 3 cups of this yogurt), no carbs and no artificial sweeteners.

When I get questions like that, I always ask, compared to what?
Are you eating it because you like the taste?
Me personally, I buy all yogurts plain and mix whatever I want in them. This way I save my chemicals for the cookies

Try Fage Greek Yogurt. You can sweeten and flavor it how you like. The ingredients are skimmed milk and live active yogurt cultures. Here's the nutritional info on the 0% fat 6 oz serving.

Calories 90
Fat 0
Cholesterol 0
Sodium 65
Carbs 7
Protein 15g

I don't doubt that but there are reasons why I don't want to substitute yogurt/dairy for meat in the morning one of which being there are healthful benefits to dairy like calcium (30%), it helps the sweet cravings and I don't do meat for breakfast. It is something I need to add for lunch/dinner so thank you for reminding me.

With that in mind, is there anything with my choice of yogurt specifically the ingredients I should be concerned about? This stuff tastes better than yoplait or any of that stuff with more sugar so I'm hoping not :-).

The reason I ask is because I'm wondering if the artificial sweeteners are bad and how big doses are they. Because plain yorgurt is less efficient for me (adding extra berries and nuts adds sugar/fat that i want to save for my smoothies) and because I have heard that aritificial sweeteners also lead to weight gain. Seems counterintuitive and i don't know if there is a real answer to that.

I think most answers were in terms of if you go more natural, you would not be taking in unnecessary chemicals, and its debatable how some of those affect you in the long run. At the amounts you are eating that, I don't think you should be extremely worried, however choices like that do add up, since you will have something else commercially produced later in the day, and where you can, you should try to go with less processed varieties. Sweeteners don't have exciting health effects

Thanks! Where can I find it though? I'm in southern california and all the greek yogurt i've found is high carb (but again I was looking at carbs not considering the possible harm of artificial sweeteners). Thank you hopefully I can find it and hopefully its not expensive either :p

Hi Gayla, thanks maybe I'll just start subbing in one greek yogurt or maybe one cottage cheese for one of my carb-masters and I'll get same/better benefits without too much added cost in long run (forgot to mention the yogurt i buy is $.50 each always so hard to beat that).

I love plain nonfat Greek yogurt. Fage is pretty popular, but I like Trader Joe's because it's pretty cheap, and recently BJ's wholesale club started carrying 3lb tubs of Chobani brand for < $5, so I've been buying that. I eat 5oz at a time and sweeten it with an all-natural zero calorie sweetener like Zsweet or Truvia, add about 1/4 cup berries and 1/3 cup Kashi Go Lean Crunch. A well balanced and filling snack, I think!

You can make your own yogurt. At 2 something dollars per gallon of milk, it comes out pretty cheap to do it. If cost is the issue, then there ya go.
Oh, and its Galya, not Gayla.

Trader Joe's is usually a good source for greek yogurt. Whole Foods may also carry it.

Yeah, I make my own yogurt sometimes and I think it comes out to about $0.16/ 6 oz container. It's tasty too!
