Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
This is a phenomenal resource for both novices and advanced people when looking at nutrition. John Berardi is a great speaker, he can put a complex idea and put it into layman's terms. If you like this you may also want to check out his appearances on The Fitcast(PODCAST).
The only thing that I disagree with is his comment in the third video about the thermogenic affect of protein.

I haven't watched them all, but I was surprised in the segment about rate of loss. He was basically advocating about 2 pounds a month. I kind of understand the concept but as someone with a lot still left to lose, I don't think I could deal with that slow a loss rate.
Thermogenic protein: I thought it was pretty well accepted that protein cals don't digest as efficiently as other cals? Not a magical g-flux kind of effect, but still a nice bonus?
I think the rate of loss "a pound a week is great!" seemed like good advice if someone is going for stable, maintanable weight loss while preserving as much muscle as possible. Faster weightloss is definitely possible, but the maintanability and muscle retention would seem to get tougher. Plus, I think it's an important psychological boost so that someone losing a couple of pounds a month doesn't feel like a failure. Which they are not.
I disagree because it is not that BIG of a calorie "burn". BMR and Exercise make up a much larger portion then the thermogenic effect of food.

We are supposed to pay him hundreds of dollars for maybe 2 pounds a month when the body is capable of losing far more than this and maintaining LBM? How then can the great John Beradi support the Velocity Diet and pimp Bronation like he does?
Other things he said were subpar. Thumbs down on the interview. He sounds like any of "TV" trainer.

Oh, I think the response was fairly good, as I agree, someone losing a pound a week shouldn't be feeling like they're failing. What the caller was after (if I'm getting her correctly) is why she was working so hard and losing so little. I think she quoted about 90 mins gym time a day. Now, I know, she didn't say what that gym time was and if it was 5 days, 6 days or two days.
I'm going to admit that if I was working out 90 mins x 6 days a week and only losing a pound I probably couldn't keep it up that long. Of course, when it comes down to it I'm usually working out 3 x 60 mins, with some walking on top of that. However, I'm losing more than a pound on that. I was really just surprised that he talked about really aiming for 1/2 pound a week.
