My current blender is a piece of crap, and doesn't even chop ice. I want to start making smoothies/protein shakes, etc .. so I need something with enough oomph to liquify ice (right now .. I just get smaller ice cubes .. it doesn't actually demolish it) .. something that will blend greens (again .. my current blender gives me "chunks" .. ) and something that's at least 400 watts .. the higher the better. Anything fabulous that's not a fortune?
I actually went the opposite direction.......i had a smoothie maker and a larger horsepower blender, but for a variety of reasons actually downsized. I am not embarrassed to say I have the Magic Bullet blender. Here is why: 1. Larger blenders mean larger batches, and more calories, or else wasted food. I can't drink a full blender full, nor do I want to, so I would have to pour it into a scond storage container in the fridge, then after a half day or a day it doesn't taste as good or as fresh. The Magic Bullet (MB from here on) is more portion controlled. 2. The cups can be used to rink right out of, so I can mix a batch and then drink it on the way to work in the AM or while I am out doing errands, or take it around the house. 3. On my larger blender with mega-horsepower, it was hard to get the ice chunks all down to the blades. For frozen strawberries I always had a chunk or two that did not get blended. With the MB a smaller batch usually means a better mix. Plus the MB has 2 different blades types, one for massive chopping and one for minor mixing. 4. I can keep it on a small shelf, whereas my smoothie maker and the regular glass blender are so big they get moved to the pantry and then don't get used as often. 5. The small MB cups can go right into the dishwasher. 6. When you have people over for a backyard BBQ, you don't have to wash a big blender every batch. You can easily do individual drinks, like a virgin strawberry daquiri for the kids, frozen strawberry for her, double shot tequila sour lime margy for him, etc. This comes in handy when I make a quick smoothy for my kid to help him take a medicine recently.
I actually wasn't impressed by the MB I'm trying to find a good blender .. or anything else that would work well to crush ice, frozen fruits, etc. to make protein shakes .. any other ideas?
See if you can find a good used VitaMix on eBay. They won't be super cheap even there, but they are GOOD blenders. A good older model is the Maxi-4000. My first one lasted 20 years with frequent, nearly daily use doing exactly what you want... making smoothies with ice, frozen fruit, spinach, etc... and a protein source.
Any advice for the somewhat lower end? (like, under $100 for sure) All I know is that the $12 durabrand I got at wal-mart can't even chop a banana all the way, let alone ice or frozen strawberries.
I haven't found any decent ones under $100. Here's the one I have and I like it.....would still love to get a Breville Hemisphere or a Vitamix someday.

Yeah .. that's what I was afraid of .. You get what you pay for, so I know i'll probably have to spend $100+ to find something truly decent .. a girl can always hope though
A decent blender can most definitely be had for under $100. I purchased this one - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=3946735 - several months ago from Wal-Mart, and it outperforms the "nicer" $120 blender I had before by a long shot. I namely use it for smoothies, and it grinds up ice very well, no chunks that get stuck in a straw, etc. I'm really happy with it so far, and have used it almost every day since I bought it back in February.

Ooo .. I kept eyeing that one and the 700w Oster blender. My biggest concern is not having clumps of ice in my glass like my current blender... so yours grinds up pretty good?

It does! The only thing is to be sure to put the liquid in first - but yes, I think it performs very well, especially given the price. My last one always left big chunks of ice that I couldn't get blended no matter what - this one doesn't do that, ever. And the way I look at it - if you buy it and are unhappy with it (which I doubt you will be), it's from Wal-Mart, and they have a great return policy.
Yesterday I picked up the fanciest blender at Walmart, an Oster Fusion (about $55).
It worked good on banana and frozen strawberry, whipping it into almost undetectable consistency. I didn't try it on ice because I don't have any ice in the freezer. How lame is that?
But I'm just excited is was better than the $12 blender.
