Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
I never measure the water I add sorry, I try to change things up, sometimes I use skim milk or kefir instead.
I haven't used milk in a bit but last week I was using 250-300g kefir.
As for flax oil, sometimes I use flax meal or chia seeds.
If the idea of the oil throws you either of the these are great subs.
I kept debatting on if putting in raw oatmeal would taste ok? How much water do you typically throw in there?
I can handle the banana .. the spinach if it's well disguised (might need a blindfold the first few times i throw one back) .. got the Pb2 covered .. but not sure I'm down with the flax oil .. the few times I tried it ..well .. I won't get into details, I'm trying to avoid protein powder until I feel it's absolutely necessary .. right now I'm trying to re-structure my eating to increase protein/decrease crappy carbs .. so i'm shooting for whole foods .. but I may end up picking up some whey protein, since I'm not a huge milk/dairy person, and not overly fond of soymilk, rice milk, etc.
Technically, rolled oats are already cooked (steamed), then rolled flat for faster "cooking." They can be okay, but they add a texture to the shake. I prefer oat bran or homemade oat flour (ground in a dry blender before being added to the shake).

There are lots of helpful micronutrients in flax seeds/flax seed meal, but not so much in the oil. Since flax seed oil is a poor choice for the good Omega-3s (especially for males), you should consider switching to fish oil (just not in your shakes).

I also take fish caps daily, just using up some oil I got a little while ago. Thanks for the tip.

IMO *some* people kind of mis-think about what a shake is kind of used for. If you want to use it to get some vegi's\protein\quick meal replacement then that's cool and all, there's nothing WRONG with making a shake. It's not really some sort of miracle silver bullet though, you know? The shake itself isn't really the point of having the things in the shake. Get your nutrients, if you decide to blend them...that's awesome...but it's not a requirement or any "better" than eating any of that stuff in whole form.
Personally I like (read as "don't hate) baby spinach in salad form....pretty well hate it any other way. And I get some sort of sick satisfaction out of chewing food rather than just swallowing, but I am a freak so you do what you do
I like baby spinach a lot, more then most I bet and have it in many forms.
Salads are awsome, I also regularly make a spinach / walnut pesto that just rocks.

I totally buy that. It's pretty much what I was trying to say in my post. There are ways to enjoy what you eat and get the nutrients that you want\need. A shake is one of those things that for me is kind of one of those "I'm too lazy to actually think of a diet plan that incorperates what I want to eat during the day" things. I get that it's not the case for every person on the planet, but as a rule
For me it's a time saver, since I'm a slow eater. I just don't have the time during lunchtime at work. It takes me a long time to eat five cups of spinach (and *chew* properly!), but not much to drink it. I do really enjoy them, too.

I guess for me .. it's a way to get in some of the less liked greens on my part (love brocolli, and every other lettuce type veggie .. hate spinach, kale, etc... but would love to have the benefits of them). I know blending them isn't the most ideal way to get them in .. but if I can get it all mushed in with some ice, fruit, etc to deflect from the taste of it .. I'll take any way of getting it down
as another way of not knowing that you are eating them, you can also make a chili and blend in a bunch of spinach, carrots, broccoli, etc. Mmmm POWER CHILI!!!

Good tip!
I'll add that if you don't want to see or taste the chunks of broc or spinach, use frozen and blend while it's still frozen, too.
A benefit of eating vegetables in solid form is that it tends to take longer to eat and you get to chew more both of which can help stave off hunger pangs.
Similarly, I feel much more full eating my protein pancakes instead of a protein shake which, depending upon how I make them, can have similar macro ratios and calories.

I totally hear ya .. I make huge salads for dinner loaded with veggies .. but wanted a less obvious way to get in some of the nutrients I miss otherwise for lack of liking the taste.
I'm also one that would prefer to eat my calories vs. drink them .. but I also want to get my protein intake up ... and since I'm going to start using whey protein .. I figured I'd try to squeeze in some other nutrients all at once
