Default What's the scoop on artificial sweeteners? ++++

They all claim "calorie free" on their deceptive little packets .. but after reading FLTS .. Leigh states that Splenda has 4 calories per gram .. And if memory serves, I thought I read the same thing regarding Equal and Sweet N Low ..

Now .. I don't use a ton of the stuff, but occasionally on less sweeter fruits, and a few times here and there in green tea and black coffee.

Are there any artificial sweeteners that actually ARE calorie free? I just bought Stevia ... and now I'm 2nd guessing what/how many calories are actually in that.

Pisses me off that these companies can claim "calorie free" .. on things that actually aren't!!

Thanks everyone!

iirc, at least for a lot of them, it's the stuff you take home and use that has the calories… because they all contain a substance that's used to deliver the sweetener… because the amount of sweetener is actually really, really tiny. So, the sweetener they use when they make pop has no calories because it doesn't have this other substance in it, just the sweetener. It's therefore supposedly the deliverer that contains most of the calories, because there's very little sweetener. If you had a lot of the sweetener without the delivering agent, it may also have calories in large amounts, but not in the tiny amounts you'd use in a serving size.

At least, that's what I recall the explanation was.

Aoife's right... also, in general, if the serving is under 5 cals, I think they can call things calorie-free (correct me if I'm wrong). In tiny servings (butter spray, sweeteners) they are "calorie-free" IF you, for example, spray for 1/2 second and stop... yeah, right!

The bigger issue for me is that they can trigger hunger/cravings (artificial sweeteners)... and for me I sometimes get very sick from them too. I'll take my 10-20 cals of sugar over all that chemical stuff, and I just avoid pop...

Yeah .. I've seriously cut back a LOT on the use of equal, sweet n low, splenda, etc .. But it just frustrates me that they can claim calorie free when it's not. Sure, if you're using a packet or two here or there, it's certaintly not likely to have a huge impact on overall caloric intake .. but there was a time where I was probably using 20-30 packets a day of equal (in coffee, tea, yogurt, oatmeal) and using I Can't Believe It's not Butter spray on lots of veggies, toast, etc., and the calories I was taking in with this "calorie free" crap just infuriates me! I guess it's just all the more reason to gradually push myself to the most natural/unprocessed things as the bulk of my food intake!

from what I gather you can count a packet of splenda as 4cals or something along those lines. the butter/oil sprays are something like 7cals a sec. so, in small amounts, you're not looking at anything diet blowing… but just like anything else, they can and do add up. if you have a big enough deficit, it still won't matter much, but heavy usage can blow a low deficit.
