No, it really isn't. I saw a post on another board yesterday that claimed the poster had lost 35 pounds in 14 days and was on track to lose 100 pounds in twelve weeks. They were drinking 7 (x100 cals) 'special liquid shakes' plus two meals of 250 cals (so 1200 cals total). Oh, and the only exercise they were doing was 2 x 1 hour walks on a treadmill at 2.5mph.

When I called bullshit on the post, a number of people said 'oh but people on the biggest loser' can lose that amount. Sigh... I sometimes think people deserve to be parted from their money. It was their first post to the board, but I'm assuming the next step would be the 'here's what I bought' pitch.

Oh, and I suppose my three daily servings of fruit are why I only lost 2 pounds this last week, right?

Actually, it's my love of fruit that keeps me away from truly low-carb diets. Although I'd be willing to bet that I could maintain or gain on unrestricted meat. However, after a couple of days I'd probably kill someone for an orange.

Uh... no it isn't. If I locked you in a 4x4 cell and fed you nothing but water for a week, you'd lose weight despite not doing exercise.

ASP (Acylation stimulating protein) definitely does regulate body-fat, if you have more then you’ll store more fat. But, if you dig just a little deeper you’ll find this:
#1. Insulin increases ASP production 2 fold
http://www.jlr.org/…/reprint/3 8/1/1
J Lipid Res. 1997 Jan;38(1):1-11
#2. “ASP… secretion is regulated by insulin”
Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2001 Jun;21(6):1034-9
http://atvb.ahajournals.org/…/ full/21/6/1034
So, ASP seems to be related to insulin."
Paper #1 is one of the early pieces on ASP that examined the in vitro effects of various components on ASP production. Adding insulin to the mix increaes ASP levels 2 fold as he mentions... Its nice that he avoids mentioning htat chylomicrons (the lipoprotein released from the intestines) increase ASP production 150 fold.

Paper #2 is not supporting that claim, its just referncing two papers in the Introduction.

References 8 and 9.

Reference 8 is Paper #1 and reference 9 is research from the same group, mainly examining the effect of chylomicron fragments on ASP production - but doesnt really seem to talk about insulin (but it has been some time since I looked at it).

its all fun and games until somebody actually reads your references...

Seriously, at some point in my life, I really figured that this was the only way I would lose weight. Kind of sad, but true.

Thanks for that cycomiko - I figured there was more to the story than what was presented.
