Default Any benefit to taking protein on off days?

I just bought this 5 lb tub of whey protien from GNC because it was on sale and mentally I feel like I wanna make sure I'm getting the full use of it. So, the question is is there any benefit to me taking it on the days where I'm not working out and just take some everyday? I don't want to waste it if there's no additional benefit to taking it on off days, but if there is even some marginal benefit I would like to use it every day.

No, you should never have protein on days you don't work out.

Why is that? I spoke with a trainer who said you need protein everyday. He gave two reasons. First, your muscles are repairing on off days. Second, particularly while you sleep and when you first wake up, your body may try to scavenge your muscles for protein.

Sorry for the noob question but this is a confusing topic for me.

OldGuy is teasing the OP - taking the words at face value and then answering in the absurd extreme.

You eat some protein every time you have eggs, beef, chicken, fish, turkey, pork, lamb, milk, cheese - even vegetables and grains contain protein - so to ask about eating protein on any particular day can be seen as a pretty silly question if you are in that sort of mood.

If you are asking about if you should consume a protein shake for any reason on a non-workout day (or a workout day for that matter) - it depends on what you are eating and if you are getting sufficient protein for your needs from whole food without it or if you think you need to supplement with a shake.

I have a protein shake every morning......because I like it and it's a quick way for me to get a nice dose of protein first thing.

This is the point. Protein in a tub is the same as all the foods listed above. If you're going to eat them on a non workout day then protein in a tub would be fine.

Thanks. I feel like a dork now, but for me that's nothing new. I should've read between the lines there.
