Default Too Much Fat? Should I be concerned?

I've been keeping a food journal for about two months now. It has done wonders for my diet and specifically my knowledge of food. It helped me to realize just how little protein I was actually eating, among other issues. I prefer to stick to whole foods. So, getting sufficient protein without overdoing the carbs or fats is tough sometimes.

But, I'm looking at my fat consumption and realizing that it might be too high. I've been averaging 90-100 grams of fats per day. I'm at about 2,500 calories per day. I'm trying to stay at this caloric intake as I'm working out quite often and don't want to go below 2,500. This is proved to be difficult at times. The fats that I'm eating all come from good sources; nuts, eggs, cottage cheese, avacado, natural peanut butter, steak, fish, olive oil, etc.

I'm reaching my fitness and body composition goals, so far at least. I'm still pretty early in the process. I've lost over 50 pounds in the last year and dropped from 35-40% body fat to just under 20%.

So, should I be worried about this? If I do cut fats its going to have a big impact on my calories! I'm worried about how to make this up without going overboard on carbs.

Thanks for your input!

Fats get a bad rep. It sounds like you're eating healthy fats and if you're reaching your body composition goals then don't rock the boat and keep going!

There you go - you answered your own question. If it's working, then why the concern?

90-100 grams is about 810-900 calories, so out of 2500 total, that's roughly one-third. Not a bad ratio at all, if your protein level is where you want it.

I just watched Leigh Peele's video on body fat percentages. I thought that back when I was pushing 250 that my body fat was 35-40%. This was just a best guess. After watching that I realize that there is no way that my body fat percentage was that high. Perhaps it was more likely around 25-30% and probably closer to 25%. I'm probably at 20% now. Most of it is in my belly! I had a bioimpedance test a couple of months ago that said I was at 22.6%. The tester thought that was a bit high. I've lost about 4 lbs since then and still made strength gains.

I'm adding this because I don't want to over dramatize my body comp changes. Its still fantastic to be moving in the right direction. But, for sake of posterity I don't want to leave that 35-40% claim laying out there uncorrected.
