Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
Whenever theres a box of cereal, or cookies, or any food sitting around; I pick at it. I'll take a nibble of cookie, a pinch of cereal, a tiny smiggen of peanut butter. I KNOW these calories add up, how can I stop!?
-Get the stuff out of your house.
-Pre-portion everything into certain calorie or portion sized bags.
-Plan for it and make an allowance in your daily calorie budget for it and make a snack bowl of stuff for you to pick at during the day, knowing that the entire contents of said bowl is XXX amount and you've planned accordingly.
Sometimes, you need to accept what you do and plan for it, rather than trying to change what you do. If you always spend $300 in groceries in a month even though you've repeatedly only budgeted $250 and swear this time you'll get it under, accept the fact that groceries cost $300 and budget accordingly, and you'll find that your planning for what you actually do anyway will get you further than you constantly going over budget.
All nibbles add up. I'm liking what Aoife writes and would suggest to you something similar. You are a nibbler , accept it & budget for those calories plus make sure you know what amount of calories you had. That's actually the worst part of it: not knowing exactly what you had. And I suppose you nibble from everything at hand?
Making a snack bowl to nibble from would not be as appealing as just nibbling from whatever that appears in front of your nose, I suppose?
So basically it comes down to what is your preference:
- having to weigh exactly what you've nibbled from , even if it is just 3 grams of something but have the freedom of choice?
- having to pre-pick your nibbles but still needing to weigh in advance and then knowing exactly what it all totals to?
Scary, that I understand the spam, the language at least
I am with the girls, accounting for the nibbles and possibly choosing healthy nibble things, like protein cookies or good cereal or all natural PB. Also, keep the nibble foods out of your sight, studies show if you don't see them, you'll eat less.
Also, keep cut up fruits and, especially, veggies in the fridge for easy snacking. Keep cereal and cracker (bad for me too) out of sight so you have to make an effort to get them.

Reason: just couldn't leave a naked swear word out there...even if that is how it comes out of my mouth in real life
Tricks and gimmicks can work like some of the others have said, such as removing "problem foods" from your house, or trying to keep healthy foods around in sight to nibble on instead, or being accountable and keeping track of everything...and I mean every little crumb that you eat so you know exactly how much food you are eating each day.
All of that stuff can work for you, but I think that some people will still unconsciously nibble and pick at things. If you are one of those people and the tricks and tactics aren't working, then you really need to look deep inside yourself and find out what exactly is causing you to constantly nibble and pick at things and correct it. You might want to keep track of the situations in which you are nibbling and picking and how you feel before, during, and after. This might help you find out the cause. For instance you might notice that you seem to pick at things at work on more stressful days, or if you are single...you may realize that you are more prone to nibble and pick at things when you are seeking some type of companionship and that the food is giving a satisfying feeling of affection. It is crazy how our minds, bodies, emotions, and food choices are all related in some way with each other.
That may very well be true, but generally I think people just fall into either one of 2 categories: grazers/nibblers or .. how do you say that nicely guzzlers/gobblers?
Me.. I love eating a lot of food at the same time, which is why eating less frequently worked wonders for me.. eating a meal = getting hungry afterwards. So, what I did was to work with this charactaristic, not against it!
So, Dafenella doesn't need to feel guilty at all, but just make better choices. Cereal may not be a great choice on diet days, but would work very well on refeed days. So, on those days, you'd probably love to eat just that as your refeed.
Would you be satisified with making a choice on what to nibble? Only nibbling from one food would be far easier when it comes to doing the math of weighing and tracking. You can make things more interesting by nibbling from a different item every single day. Or choose 2 or even 3 different things to nibble from , they'd need to have a different texture and/or macronutrient profile.
Make it a challenge.. and work with your preferences, never against them.. in the long run that's far easier than trying to get rid of them.. just modify the habit so it will fit into your diet pattern.
