Default Good stuff to add to ground beef

Im looking for some good stuff to add to ground beef. I'm not much of a cook, but recently I throw a pound of ground beef in a skillet with black beans, onion, tomato, mushrooms, just a little pasta sauce and some seasoning (salt, pepper, cumin, chili powder, crushed red pepper). Kinda like chili, although its not real saucy.

What are some other combinations of foods/spices I can add to ground beef that taste good and are fairly nutritious? Healthy fats, good carbs, etc..

Thanks!

i make 2 small thin hamburger patties, and then put shredded cheese and crumbled bacon on top of one of them, then stick the other on top and seal the two together. This makes some awesome burgers b/c they are a lot juicer and flavorful than just patties

For the meat, i just throw in some oregano, little basil, lots of garlic, salt and pepper.

When I make hamburgers, I shred zucchini and mix it in with the beef (or turkey). It's perfect if you have kids that don't like veggies. You can't taste the zucchini, and it makes the burger more moist.

When I'm low carb dieting I just brown up some ground beef, dump some salsa, Frank's Red Hot, and cajun spice in, and go to town. I like it hot, plus it helps with a thermogenic response.

-A couple lbs of browned ground beef
-can of sliced black olives
-can of sliced mushrooms
-half a jar of vodka sauce
-the innards of a steamed spaghetti squash

It's like a big bowl of pasta with meat sauce. But very low carb compared to regular pasta (depending on the sauce you use).

My favorite is adding eggplant (in small cubes), sundried tomato, a handful of raisins, and don't forget to season with toasted cumin and a dash of cinnamon.

Another option is shredded cabbage, carrots and cumin, very unusual for the traditional American diet, but awesome tasting.

Those both sound really interesting, I may have to try those. This may be a dumb question, but where do you buy eggplant? Do regular grocery stores have it? Whats the best way to cook it?

I'd suggest baking it, because eggplant (as I understand it) acts like a sponge when cooked, so lots of extra calories if fried.

You are almost inspiring me to write an eggplant tutorial
You can find it in any grocery store, I've been able to find it everywhere in the US. Go for firm and shiny eggplants, they tend to feel limp when they get older.
Eggplants taste a bit bitter sometimes, which is why after you cut them in the way you will prepare them, it's good to soak them in water with some salt in it. The water will turn slightly brown.
Though they are awesome cooked in a lot of olive oil (the Greeks have that down, by cooking eggplants in their own weight in oil), that adds a ton of calories. I like to marinate them in some olive oil and pesto or just spray them with some olive oil and then broil them in the oven or grill them.
The laziest way to cook one is to just wrap the whole fruit (vegetable) in foil and stick it in the oven for about an hour (like you would do a baked potato). Then you can use it instead of avocado in a guacamole like dip with garlic, tomatoes and parsley.
I will try to post some specific recipes later, but cooked with beef in a pan like I told you above, works awesome

Excellent, thanks. I just looked up the nutritional info, I didn't realize how much fiber was in them, cool.

So let me get this straight, if i were to make your recipe, I would first cut up the eggplant into small cubes and soak them in water, then spray them with olive oil and broil them in the oven? Is broiling them better than just putting them in the oven at like 400 degrees? If broiled, do I just broil until brown? will they be cooked all the way through?

Sorry about all the questions, I look forward to trying the recipe. Oh, one more thing...I have some cumin, when you say "toasted cumin", do you mean toasted cumin seeds? Would plain old cumin work?

ground beef with chickpeas, diced tomatoes (canned low sodium ones), black olives, basil, oregano. Like pasta saucey without the pasta. cubed zucchini and sauteed onion are good added to that too.

Here's what you do for the ground beef and eggplant.
Cube the eggplant, soak it. Saute it on its own in a bit of olive oil. You can chop up some onion and saute that too. Cook the ground beef as usual. Add a dash of cinnamon, a handful of raisins and the cumin (toasted means you just put it on a dry pan for about a minute so it starts to smell good). Then add the eggplant to the beef, stir and cook until it seems completely done You will know because the eggplant will not be white and/ or hard anymore. Garlic is awesome in this.

Thanks for the explanation

I still have not bought any though. I went grocery shopping yesterday and there were only 3 eggplants left. I felt all of them and they were all pretty soft so I decided to pass. Ill have to check elsewhere this week.

Stuffed green peppers baby! they're to die for! Brown some ground beef .. add sauteed chopped onions, a can of diced tomotoes, some cumin, fresh ground pepper, steam some brown rice .. mix is all together while you're boiling hollowed out / de-seeded peppers. Stuff all the goodness inside the boiled green peppers, than add a smidge of tomato sauce on top and lightly sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese .. one of the few times I'll ever claim that those suckers ARE better than sex! (peanut butter runs first .. stuffed peppers are a close second)
