Precisely! Alan knocked this topic around in a previous issue of the AARR.
Basically there was a 1000% + increase in consumption of HFCS from the 70's to present and a concomittent spike in obesity. I think we are so hard-wired to expect a simple answer and HFCS became a nice scapegoat.
As Alan points out, it's only with ridiculous amount that it becomes problematic - and under hypercaloric conditions.
In hypocaloric situations, HFCS doesn't seem to have any special lipogenic properties.
To boot, the most common form of HFCS consumption is in pop - which is only 50% fructose. Most ratios of HFCS are about 60/40 (fructose/glucose).
That said, we eat too damn much HFCS at 78 or so pound per year.
