There are so many foods I eat daily, I've been thinking about getting a membership at Sam's Club or Costco. Is it worth it? I'm hoping to find good deals on chicken breasts (preferably hormone-free), tuna, liquid egg whites, etc. What clean foods have you found at these places, and which store do you prefer?
Sam's has big 5 lb. bags of EAS whey protein which is the best deal I've found so far.
Also get frozen chicken breasts, salmon fillets, eggs, tuna, fish oil, glucosamine-MSM, vitamins. I'm not aware of them carrying organic or hormone-free meats, but you never know.
The local Sam's just started carrying 1-lb packages of organic baby spinach.

Chicken breasts, eggs, string cheese, bananas, any good sales on seafood (tilapia, shrimp scallops), peanut butter, canned tomatoes (I go through a ton of these), salsa........in fact, I am hitting Sam's tomorrow.
For anyone who goes to Sam's and buys Laura's Lean Ground Beef.....what do they carry and where is it?
Pretty much everything in multiples from Sam's Club:
--10lb bags of frozen chicken breasts
--2lb packs of turkey lunchmeat
--2lb packs of sliced cheese
--18-count cartons of eggs (when unavailable locally here)
--10-packs of canned tuna
--2-packs of loaf bread
--5lb bags of frozen fruit
--120-count bags of medium shrimp
--5lb tubs of cottage cheese
Probably a couple other things. Mind you, I hate grocery shopping, so I go once a month.

The bags of skinless boneless chicken breasts, 4lb bags of frozen brocolli florettes, 2lb boxes of fresh blueberries and strawberries in season, 25lb case of fresh Copper River Salmon fillets every year, whole ahi tuna loins, whole beef and pork loins. Rib and loin steaks cut to order as thick as I want.
Yes, my Sam's Club membership is worth the cost.

Sam's offers a "click and pull' service where you place your order online. Then, they pull all the items in the order and have it ready for you at the store. Once at the store, there's a 5 minute wait while they get any frozen items in the order. Then you pay at the register. Saves a lot of time and there's no opportunity for impulse shopping.
Works great with frozen foods and dry goods. However, with fresh produce or meat, it's best to select your own for freshness.

FYI, the US gov't prohibits administration of hormones to poultry so ANY chicken you buy ANYWHERE is going to be free of added hormones.
Like others, I buy the following at costco. pricing is approximate.
10-lb bag of chicken breast: $23
8-can pack of albacore tuna: $9
6-carton box of egg whites: $8
6 bell peppers: $6
3 english cucumbers: $3
2-lb bag of baby spinach: $4
big tub of mixed baby salad greens: $5
1-lb package of roasted turkey lunchmeat: $7
4-lb bag of frozen ahi tuna steaks: $11
4-lb bag of frozen blueberries: $7
bottle of fish capsules - 180 caps (1200mg) - $15
quaker oatmeal - 2 giant bags - $5
totally worth the membership, IMO.

I think this is pretty spot on, but closer to $30/5lb bag. Still, better than bulknutrition.com now, which is where I used to shop.
Yup. 28.99 for a five pound bag. It's the best deal I've found on whey protein anywhere, and it comes in any flavor you like as long as it's chocolate or vanilla.

And the chocolate is far better than the vanilla, in my opinion. But, at least you've got a wide variety of choices, right?
Last trip to Sam's I picked up a whole cooked turkey breast. MUCH better than sliced turkey, I thought. That sliced turkey seems to get all wet and slimy. Yuck! This whole breast was great because I could slice a few pieces to take to lunch and it worked really well.
Chicken breasts at Albertsons $1.77 lb
Almonds(raw) Sprouts $3.99lb
Post Trail Mix Cruch Cranberry Vanilla cereal $1.88. I cleaned out the shelf.
Don't have a membership at Costco or Sams
I get salmon, shrimp, tilapia that I freeze (I'm vegetarian). Also, oats, soymilk, fruit, veggies as I eat a lot of them at times, almonds, raisins, will def try the whey next time I am there as I'm out of protein almost... I buy water bottled there too..
Oh, mandarin oranges in cans are good too. Sometimes tuna in cans... I try to keep it healthy. Just got back into Gold's Gym and have been very good for last 3 weeks. ;-)

Yeah, technically Anna would be considered a "pescetarian." Nothing wrong with that - I used to be one, too. Now I'm the biggest carnivore you've ever seen!
What is 'bulk' for you?
I'd love to buy in bulk, but with a small fridge & freezer w just 3 drawers (though it seemed large at the time I bought it) , there's not much you can do. Generally I buy meat/chicken in bulk when it's on sale, like
- several kg ground beef
- several kg of chicken breasts (when I run out of it, I buy smaller amounts or opt for pre-cooked frozen breasts that actually are same price as fresh 'thawed' chicken breasts on sale)
- 5-6 packs of frozen Alaska pollock (400g): it's cheaper & tastier than cod and I'm using it to hit my protein target when using fattier meats in smaller amounts
- several bags of frozen veggies (750g bags)
- 60-90 eggs every week
The rest is more like replacement in smaller amounts once I run out of it..
I've bought 10kg bags of basmati rice, but when that turned bad too soon, I switched to the almost equally expensive 1kg packs of rice (sometimes also pandan rice). This is something to consider when you buy in bulk. It may be cheaper, but it may also spoil. Same happened when I bought a larger container of coconut oil. Somehow this stuff doesn't agree with me and I ended barfing on it and threw out the container.
Now I use Jarrow's virgin coconut oil in smaller containers .. more expensive but it doesn't spoil like that huge container did.

this sounds like what i ate for breakfast.

chicken, pork, veggies, fruits, snacks, bread, pasta, sauce, canned goods, more condiments than you'll ever use in 5 years, milk, eggs, fish/flax oil, vitamins, 90 claritin for $35, tp/tissues, paper plates/towels, water. Not counting the random non-food items like great storage for the food (recently, and so waaay better than the disposable glad stuff), socks, hard drives, printer paper, file folders, light bulbs, markers, scissors, plastic ware, tv, blah blah blah…
Costco is definitely worth it. I personally wouldn't shop at Sams, but then it's because of the whole Walmart thing and I prefer the Costco philosophy. Plus, the people are usually happy employees, not irritated walmart employees.
It'd potentially be worth, and we're looking into getting, a freezer, to make more meals freezable after cooking, for longer storage than what works for the fridge. The small ones, which are plenty big enough to stow a kid or two in, run about $200. If you need the extra space.
Fortunately, any of the stores will let you go in and take a look around to decide if you want membership. So you can gauge for yourself if there's enough there to make it worth it. Costco is even worth for us the executive ($100) membership that earns you cash back.
Also remember that at some, at least at some Costco and BJs, you can get discounted gas. Not always a gynormous saver, but during the last big raise going around, Costco got to more than 30 cents a gallon cheaper than average, and 20 cents cheaper than the cheapest we could find otherwise. fwiw
You can get a 6 pack of red/yellow/orange peppers (2 of each) for about $7 at Sam's. Kroger would cost close to $20 for the same assortment. That alone is enough to justify our membership, as we go through a pack of those a week.
Ground turkey is another one. 5lb pack of it for $11. Freeze half of it, eat half of it.
I have had memberships to both Sams and Costco, Sam's is cheaper but I have found the quality at Costco for meat is much better.
I usually buy the same things there-
3lbs Bananas- $1.30
Mixed Greens- $4
Milk- $2.29
Chicken- $10-$25 depending on what kind and how much
Whole Wheat Bread- $4.50 for 2 loaves
Eggs- I think around $3
Fresh Veggies- usually cucumbers, red peppers, broccoli, snap peas
Fruit
Brita Pitcher Filters- the cheapest place to find them- $40 for 18 of them
Sounds cliche, but I'm thinking about getting a bulk supply of Clif bars seasonal flavors! i LOVE pumpkin flavor and i want to stock up on the spiced pumpkin pie before they take it out of stores! But on a regular basis I don't buy much in bulk since I'm a college student shopping for only myself. the things I buy a lot of are tuna fish, smoked salmon, ricotta cheese, nuts (pecans, almonds, walnuts), and granola.
