Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
Supplement question - A lot of multivitimans have too much vitamin A - good or bad?
I have been looking in the store for good multivitamin supplements add to my daily routine and most multivitamins have like 5000 or 10,000IU of Vitamin A. I have read at Vitamin and Mineral Best Bets -- RealAge Food and Nutrition Tools under the Vitamin A section that too much Vitamin A can harm health. It also says that if we take multivitamin, it should contain no more than 2,500-3,000IU of Vitamin A. Most multivitamins (actually, like 95% of them I have looked at so far) contain 5000 or 10000IU.
What I found at the grocery store today (had a choice between either Multi Complete or Multi for Her . I chose Multi Complete. It has 2500IU of Vitamin A (Multi for Her has the same everything as Multi Complete does, so it probably did not matter which I chosed), which is safe according to realage.com The only thing about Multi Complete and this also goes with "Multi for Her" as well is that there is no Potassium once so ever. I don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing.
Oh and is the "Multi for Her" supplement the same as the "Multi for Her" supplement at Multi For Her Reviews and Information at Nutritional Tree ? The picture is different (I am thinking because one is a picture of the box and one is a picture of the actual bottle), so thats why I am asking. Because of these reviews (could find none on the one I bought), I may take it back and get the Multi for Her instead. The only thing that got me thinking is the "no potassium" for either one of them. After I took one tablet of "Multi Complete" today at lunch for the first time along with Neuro PS Gold that I take now (been taking it for a week and am getting the results I should be getting), the Multi Complete I think gave a little affect that made me feel tired (drifting off to sleep at the computer) and I felt that my mind was wondering weirdly for about an hour or 2. I am fine now though.
What do you guys think? Should I take my multivitamin I currently have back to the grocery store for the "Multi for Her" one instead or keep it or get a different one (any recommendations?)? What is narrowing down my choices is my thoughts on how much Vitamin A is in each supplement, so I really want to know about the Vitamin A before going any further. I am also looking into a Lutein supplement to protect my eyes from getting dry and strain from being on the computer a lot and such. My mom's side of the family (95% of them) wear either glasses or contacts, and I do not ever want to get to a point where I'll need to wear glasses.
The main 3 questions I would like to know is what I want to know about Vitamin A, if I am taking the right multivitamin or need to exchange it for a different one, and also what to look for. I also want to know if there is a difference between brands (not asking about the mg or IU or mlg, I am asking about the brand names if there is a difference in them?). What matters more...the brand or what vitamins and minerals are in the supplement not mattering what brand it is?
I saw your post and would like to offer some advice.
The very last question you asked is the most important...and that is in reference to the 'brand' of supplements you take. With nutritional supplements - TRUST is the issue.
If the product (company) can not be trusted to supply the right nutrients in the right amounts - AND...THIS IS IMPORTANT...provide PROOF that the product breaks down and gets in your bloodstream...the other questions are pretty much irrelevant.
The PROOF comes in the form of actual clinical studies that have been done ON THAT PRODUCT. Most products have never been tested for absorption.
Studies have shown that over 60% of products on the market have dissolution problems and don't benefit the consumer.
The ONLY product that has undergone independent clinical testing - proving absorption and safety and efficacy (effectiveness)...and then the study was published in peer-review journal...is S***** Corporation.
A Landmark study - conducted at U.C. Berkeley - by a world renown nutrition epidemiologist - ...just proved that S****** products not only offer amazing long-term health benefits - but much more so than other brands tested.
see the October 2007 issue Nutrition Journal.
S*****'s multivitamin is called "X"...it is the most complete on the market - and more importantly - has been clinically proven to get into the blood stream in 12 minutes. It is backed by more than 4 clinical studies
With regards to vitamin A...X supplies 2500 IUs of A, and 2500 IUs of Beta Carotene (the benefit of the beta carotene is that the body converts it to A only as needed).
This is the recommended does from the Council for Responsible Nutrition. In fact, they recommend X as the perfect Multivitamin.
You won't find it in stores - but you can call an independent distributor.
there is no potassium in the multi. Most don't play around with this because you have to be careful with potassium. It can be taken as a separate supplement. Be careful not to get too much. We have other products that do have potassium but not the multi.
In regards to the Lutein. We have a wonderful product called Y. The absorption levels are very high with this product - and there is nothing like it on the market. Let me know if you have questions about it and I'll get more info to you.
Ok. Sounds like a sales job I know. But I might as well do you a favor and help you not to waste your money - but use the most clinically proven product there is.
If you don't get it from me...please get S****** from someone. It's the best product on the market.
If you're interested - I'll give you a significant discount - say 30%. Email me if you have any questions.

Reason: SPAM - left most of it untouched so Cykomiko could slam it
umm you only have like one post here. I don't know if I can trust you because you can be someone just trying to get someone to buy your product.
By the way, I am taking the multi complete (multivitamins) back to the store and I am going to get a liquid one instead (probably vita complete by vitabase. it has perfect ratings at VitaComplete Reviews and Information at Nutritional Tree).
multi complete gave a negative effect (explained in my post above that it made my mind wonder and my brain was trying to drift off to sleep..something opposite from what I wanted) for a couple hours right after I took the pill. Plus, multi complete had no ratings anywhere and is not well known.

I saw your post and thought of spam

ahh, cross sectional surveys, what useless information you provide. Even better, in the Nutrition Journal. Top quality stuff.
Wow, supplement users had a variety of better health markers than non users. Thats never been seen before (sic). Never mind massive methodological issues with the research (yaay, lets use people that attend a S***** Corp national meeting... and compard to the USDA ongoing nutritional dataset known as NHANES...
always good comparisons. Like how taking supplements make you more educated and higher income too...
or it could be that taking supplements makes you an older female with lower bmi?
not htat it all matters cos its a garbage piece of shit that doesnt show that taking these supplements gives amazing long-term health benefits - but much more so than other brands tested.
Surveys are a pain like that.

Wow, a council that has S****** as a member recommends S*****s products as the perfect multivitamin. What an amazing coincidence.

Reason: just getting rid of product names
Plus, you are much better off with a blend of mixed carotenoids than either preformed Vitamin A or isolated beta carotene. When you take in isolated beta carotene it competes with and blocks absorption of the other 100s of health promoting carotenoids found in produce. Preformed Vitamin A in higher doses increases bone fracture rate.
I decided to buy the vitamins seperete. I have NOW FOODS vitamin B complex, NOW FOODS vitamin C complex, Nature Made Vitamin D with K, NOW FOODS Vitamin E, Zinc with Copper, and also Flavay Plus (been taking 2 each morning for 3 mornings so far and I feel great). I am also taking PS-100 (with choline and serine to get my extra 100mg per day). I ordered everything from iherb.com except flavay plus (I got it from its site). The location where the stuff comes from is like an hour and a half from my house (I live in southern california), so it comes next day. no shipping charges and no tax.
By the way about vitamin A - I take 5000 a day (2 pills of flavay plus a day is 5000 all together of vitamin A), so thats perfect speaking of Vitamin A.
By the way - by taking all these vitamins, I now feel healtheir than ever and I find myself reacting to things faster, remembering better, not arguing, focusing better, better mood (feeling good about myself and confident), and last but not least....relaxed and calm. I got everything for the right price (iherb sells these cheap half price than what is in the store) and I always go by the good ratings) and also the right amount of pills in the bottles. I wanted pills that I only need to take once a day with and will at least last 2 months. Most will last 3-4 months, which is good.
I am now happy and feel healtheir than ever and also in a good mood. I also find myself getting in bad moods way less than I used to and I also have more energy. Vitamins are the best!
They generally suggest 10 000 IU/day from cod liver oil. What about bone fracture? Vit D. Some sources suggest ratios of 10/1 to 5/1 of Vit A/D
As for supplements - not all Vit A is created equal. Retinol found in liver(cod, pork, veal etc.) is far more bio-active than beta-carotene(carrots).
Wikipedia suggests that 12 units of beta carrotene dissolved in water equals 1 unit of retinol. Also - synthetic vitamins have a lower absorbtion rate and higher toxicity.
P.S. Pork liver has about 15 000 units per 100 gram portion(7000 units retinol) and it can still be consumed on a daily basis. Vit A toxicity in healthy individuals has been shown to occur at doses of 100 000 IU/day taken everyday for months. Again - Vit D deficiency contributes to the toxic effect.
Quote:
Acute toxicity generally occurs at doses of 25,000 IU/kg, with chronic toxicity occurring at 4,000 IU/kg daily for 6-15 months.[22] However, liver toxicities can occur at levels as low as 15,000 IU per day to 1.4 million IU per day, with an average daily toxic dose of 120,000 IU per day. In people with renal failure 4000 IU can cause substantial damage. Additionally excessive alcohol intake can increase toxicity. Children can reach toxic levels at 1500IU/kg of body weight
On the other hand, I take Flavay Plus for my ADD now (been on it for about 2 and a half weeks now) and its only 5000mg per day, so I'm fine. I don't take anymore than 2 pills per day (2 in the morning) and thats it. For all my vitamins, I decided to not take a multivitamin and decided to go to seperete vitamins. I take B (B Complex), C, D with K and Calcium, E, magnesium, and Zinc with Copper. I also take L-Tyrosine, L-Phenylalanine, Phosphatidyl Serine, Lutein Esters (to help with dry eyes and watery eyes, seems to wory very well), RX Omega 3 (the #1 best sellers and rating list at the i-herb site for ADD and #1 for fish oil category. mecury free),and acetyl-L-Carnitine. The herbs I take are Gotu Kola (to help calm me down from worrying so much and get more confidence in myself and more relaxed), Panax Gingseng, and Ginkgo. I also take move free advanced trying to get rid of my knee clicking and is slowly disapearing, which is a good sign that its working (been taking it for over 2-3 months already) and will take 6 months total for my knee clicking/popping to be gone completly. I don't want later on in life knee clicking to turn into knee clicking with pain. I want to prevent before it happens. I bought everything from iherb.com and based everything on best sellers and best ratings.
I have played around with the different brain and mood pills and herbs including the flavay plus by not taking it for one or 2 days and see how I feel (eliminating different ones to see which may work or may not work). I found that eliminating one can make me not feel 100% normal. My focus is to be normal like everyone else. In about a month or 2, the pills should all really kick in and I should be 100% normal like everyone else and liked by everybody as well and hopefully get good in art (my major), make the softball team for 2009, and most important...find a boyfriend!
and no I do not take everything all at one time. In the morning I take my flavay plus, Move Free Advanced, L-Tyrosine, L-Phenylalanine, Phosphatidyl Serine, acetyl-L-Carnitine, RX Omega 3, and Lutein Esters. At snack time (during my 10 minute break at work), I take all my vitamins and minerals. At Lunch time, I take my 3 herbs (Panax Gingseng, Ginkgo, and Gotu Kola), L-Tyrosine, L-Phenylalanine, Phosphatidyl Serine, acetyl-L-Carnitine and RX Omega 3
I only take 1 pill in the morning and one pill at lunch of L-Tyrosine, L-Phenylalanine, Phosphatidyl Serine, acetyl-L-Carnitine, RX Omega 3 just to let you guys know. I tried before just morning time or just lunch, and I was not feeling much of an affect than I would if I did 1 in morning and one at lunch. Everything else I take 1 pill a day of. Flavay Plus and Move Free says on the bottle 2 pills, so I only take 2 in the morning like it says.
What do you guys think? I hope its not too much. I have read posts of other people taking supplements and they take even more than what I take.
Your post is a neon sign that you are a walking placebo. I think you should take a huge chill pill. Like 4 billion mg, as often as you want.
p.s. -- when I googled the first thing you said you take, the first page is full of your posts here and on other boards. Not good for someone who hates spam.
p.p.s. -- everyone else is not normal
