Water Filters
I didn't know where to put this so I hope this is the right spot. Does anybody have any recommendations on water filters for my kitchen sink? Anything in paticular that I need to be looking for? Any brands better than any other? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've used both Britta and Pur for a faucet mount three stage water filter. I consider Pur to be the best by virtue of construction and the taste of the water that comes out.
The filters seem to last longer also.
Britta has Pur beat in the ease of changing filters/ For Britta's you just push a button to release the old cartridge and snap on the new one, whereas Pur requires you to unscrew a cap, pull the old cartridge out, insert a new and screw a cap back on.
Oh, Britta also has an idiot light, incase Pur's progress bar confuses you. Truthfully, I tend to change filters about 2/3-3/4 of the way into it, else it's just dribbling out.

Depends what you want to filter.
We use a Big Berkey. But if you're a city-dweller and just want to improve taste, I agree with Cynic.

I still haven't got one yet. I want a good one though. We had one at our old house (brita) I think and over time it kind of looked like it was corodining (sp) or something.

Well, are you looking to get a major piece of HW for water filtration or are you looking for the faucet mount or pitcher type?
My Pur was a chrome plated plastic contraption that started looking pretty dingy over time due to water spotting and grime. Wiping it down made it look decent if not new.

Cynic I am just looking for a faucet unit nothing extremley expensive. I will compare the Pur and the Brita and go with one of those I think.

I've had both a Pur and Brita, and I always found that the Pur water tended to come out tasting better...

I was wondering if water straight from the tap is truly that bad that one should purchase a PUR filter? What makes is in the water that could make it harmful???

Excessive chlorine, lead, biological contaminants, etc.

When your town sends you a notice saying that it just recently failed a test about the clarity of its water. I like my water clear.

The water that comes out of my faucet pre pur tastes horrible. water shouldn't have flavor, and if it does, it shouldn't taste like swimming pool and gym socks. After Pur filter, it tastes clean, clear, crisp. I drink more water whenmy tap water tastes good.
