Default Red wine suggestions

Hey all, I didn't know where else to post this question but I wanted to know if anymore had a good recommendation for a red wine (I currently drink pinot noir for the anti-ox. properties). I'm a college student so basically... um, broke haha so I was looking for a decent red wine that's good bang for the buck. I recently have been drinking Corbett Canyon and its pretty bleh. Any and all suggestions are appreciated Thanks!

I know you are college student broke - but are you in the $10-15 range, the <$10 range, the <=$4.99 range (per bottle)? Trader Joe's usually has some bargain reds (and not just two buck chuck).

The best red wine value in the US is Cru Beaujolais. The label won't say Beaujolais on it so you have to look up the names of the villages it is made in and write them down, or just ask at the wine store.

Beaujolais Villages is a mixture of Beaujolais from several different places and generally isn't as good or much cheaper.

Cheap Bordeaux tends to be a good value. You should be able to find many examples of 2003 -2005 Bordeaux at a well stocked wine store for around $12-$15. They are generally pretty good.

For me, you can't beat any of the reds from Barefoot. And, we are talking about 5 bucks a bottle!!! And, the whites are good, too!

I buy it all the time and when I serve it to guests, I am always embarrassed to tell them what it is because it's so inexpensive, but everyone loves it!

Brian - if you were in Washington State I could direct you to a near great bottle of wine for under $7 almost any day at our State Liquor Stores. I recommend that you ask some of your classmates if they have a mom or dad near where you are (usually but not always the dad) who are value shoppers for wine. Such a person is likely to enjoy passing on the information they have learned on drinking well and drinking cheap.

For a college student, direct yourself to the nearest Trader Joes. If you don't like the two buck chuck, there are lots of $5 bottle. Their own label is very drinkable and usually $5.

The best label I have ever found under $10 is McMannis, McManis Family Vineyards. I have yet to find a wine that is a better value. However, unless you are near the central valley in California, you will have a very hard time finding it

Good Wine Under $20

best bet, find good wine stores in your area. go in, talk to the people who work there and should be knowledgeable on the subject. tell them what you like, what you don't like and what your budget is.

I've had this more than once and it was always drinkable - not great - but drinkable

look to cabernet from Chile

You can get a good wine for $10. Seriously.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to hunt around and see what I can find. As for the Trader Joe's wine... that bastard doesn't seem to want to sell alcoholic beverages in my area... but he did have a good selection of disgusting looking .1% wine. Oh well, I'll forgive him cause I love his soy nuggets and salmon burgers haha

I like all the Yellow Tail red wines. You can get one of those big bottles (which is like 2 regular size bottles of wine) for $12 at the grocery store. My personal favorite is the Shiraz, but all the reds are really good. My fiancee and I drink a lot of wine, and that has th best combination of good price and good taste that we;ve found. It's also easy to find. There is also something called two-buck-chuck which is supposed to be good but I don't know much about it. Maybe someone else can chime in on that one. Anyway, hope that helps!

Yellowtail has got to have some sugar added to it, though. It is SO sweet; I don't like it at all.

Anyway, you still haven't mentioned your price point. $5 or $15?

Oh, sorry, I totally forgot (I think I lifted myself stupid[er] today hehe) I can probably afford between $5-$15 especially if the wine lasts me.

The wine store I go to if I'm looking for something other than what's at Whole Foods mostly sells expensive wines (some more than $1,000 a bottle, for example). But they sell a few inexpensive wines that are good for "everyday" drinking. One that I have found there recently that I really like is Marietta red wine. They have it in the Zin section but it just says red wine on the label. They sell it for $14.99, or maybe $13.99. Here's the makers' website: Marietta Cellars / Our Wines

Cotes du Rhone.

French wine usually in the 8-12 dollar range. Tasty wine and fairly common.

Personally I go for the Autrailian wines. Rosemont has a very nice cabernet and some pino-cab blends. It's under $15 a bottle and nice stuff. There whites are good as well - they have a Reisling (I'm not sure of the spelling) that is my favorite of all time. I don't like the Shiraz as much - but it does pack a punch.

So, are Jack P and Karen P both promoting the same affiliate program for abs?

My favorite, but it's not cheap, is Gregg Norman's Limestone Coast's Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend. It's about $15/bottle.

I like cabs more so than any other, and the merlot help temper what is usually a musty favor.

You could look on wine.com. They have a listing of 90+ pt wines for < $20. You may not be able to buy from them (shipping regs with regard to alcohol in the mail), but you can at least take down some names.

Get yourself a vacumn vin. It's a rubber stopper and a device for removing the air in an opened bottle. It works well.

I thought of another one- Clois du Bois Pinot Noir. It's like $12 bucks and I love it.

I like the Bulletin Place zin, cab and shiraz, my local store has them on sale now and then for about $4.50. Pretty standard South Australia quality at a really good price.

Cline makes some great wines for the money. The zin and all of the ancient vine varieties are just awesome, and the Oakley Five Reds is a very decent table wine. I pay $10 for the Clines and $6 for the Oakley when they're on sale.
Also in the $8-10 range are Nine Stones shiraz from Australia (three labels, Hilltops is the best) and Gallo of Sonoma are good solid wines.

In the $12-$15 range, all of the red-stripes from d'Arenberg are fantastic, but I especially like "The High Trellis" cab and "The Custodian" grenache. Oh yeah and "D'Arry's Original" grenache-shiraz blend. Jim Barry also makes a great cab called "The Cover Drive", and possibly my favorite shiraz ever, called "The Lodge Hill".

The store I shop at has Yellowtail, but they also have a big disclaimer sign stating that it's an inferior quality Franzia box wine repackaged and well marketed. It also says "We don't understand the popularity of this wine, but due to customer demand we have to stock it. We will not accept returns on this wine. Buy it at your own risk."
