Default New Protein Suggestions.

Well I've almost downed my first 2 gallons of Nitro-Tech and I wanted to go with something different to shake things up a bit.

I just wanted to hear some others suggestions on what they like and why.

Links would be nice, too.

I used optimum nutrition chocolate for a good number of years. Now, i've been using trueprotein's premium flavors (orange creme, strawberry and cream, and vanilla are my favorites). Both ON and TP are both good for their price. It looks like the stuff you bought was just a mix of whey protein concentrate and isolate.

What's the best bang for your buck at Trueprotein? Can I get a link to it?

True Protein | High Quality Nutrition and Protein Supplements

Its a pretty cool site you can either make your own custom protein or buy one of their pre-mixed protein. From what I've heard its a quality protein (mines in the mail so havent tried it yet) and its not too expensive either. Only problem is they dont ship to PO boxes so I couldn't ship it direct to my college...

I'm looking through the site and honestly I have no idea what to choose for my goals. There are a ton of choices and they don't seem to specific. Also, looking at the custom supplements, I have no idea how to utilize those either.

So what are your goals? Maybe we can take a look at them and make a custom blend that will suit your goals if you're intrested in trying true protein.

Well my goal for now and probably a few more months is to "bulk up". I'm trying to eat enough calories to of course get the proper amount of muscle that I'm working for. In the process I'm sure I'll gain some fat, but that's how it is.

Right now I'm just looking for a Post-Workout shake that can get into my body real quick so help aid in recovery and muscle gain.

I was also thinking out getting a "weight gainer" too. But I just don't know what to choose.

So are you trying to get all your recovery nutrition in your post-workout shake? I guess what I'm saying is will you be adding the protein mix to a smoothie or anything like that or are you looking to get everything in the protein mix?

Not sure if that made sense...

As for weight gainers...I'm not a very big fan. The only reason I could see you use one if you just dont have enough time to get something to eat.

What i use is whey protein concentrate. I'm a college kid, and it's cheap, and effective. Some people say it has a bitter aftertaste to it, but i don't really notice it. I've used concentrate for about 4-5 years i'd say.

Whey protein concentrate or whey protein isolate is what you'll find in most "quality" protein drinks. I think metrx uses it in their prebottled ones.

Whey protein isolate is a protein that supposedly has a cleaner taste to it. It doesn't really have a big aftertaste to it. I've never tried it though, but the big negative is that it's like 9 bucks/pound where concentrate is 5-6/pound.

It all depends on your taste. If you get ones from TP, i would definitely get the premium flavors. Those are awesome. The strawberry and creme and the vanilla ones are 2 of the best tasting strawberry/vanilla combos i've tried. I'm not a big fan of their double dutch fudge, but a lot of ppl are. Orange creme is awesome, and their banana flavors are really good as well if you like banana.

Now, from the message boards on TP, the popular favorites by them are DC's protein formula, and team skip formula in terms of taste. I've never tried these though, so i can't tell you from experience if they're good or not. These can both be found under the formulas, and then "premix" section of their website.

For post workout, they have this?
True Protein | High Quality Nutrition and Protein Supplements

it would give you your 2/1 carb protein ratio if you want to go that route.
I don't know if i would go this route though, b/c the mix has bcaas in it, which are very bitter, and can effect the taste.

There's also waxy maize, which is a starch you could add for your carb intake. I didn't really like this initially, but it's not too bad now. It's a starch though, so your drink will be very starchy. I'd recommend mixing this with a lot of water for your PWO.

I like this route, if you can stand the taste, b/c the carb is unsweetened, so you can add it to your protein, and you won't have to buy 2 different mixes. Plus, it's only like 3 bucks a pound, which is pretty cheap.

are you set on shakes for gainers? I would just get a protein w/o carbs that you can use at all times of the day, and then just add stuff to the shakes from there.

Does this help at all? Post up any more questions you have. I would stay away from "gainers" because if you look at the ingredients, they have 80-100g of sugar (maltodextrin usually), in them. Just stick with good whole foods and add your protein in there. Milk is a great way to pack on weight easily.

Well I'm looking for a PWO shake but I also like to drink shakes on off days too, on occasion. So I guess I'm looking for a good protein shake that I can drink anytime of the day, but that would also be good for Post-Workout.

As far as the weight gainers go... I work a 13-14 hour shift and you can only pack so much into a lunch box and I can only prepare so much food for the next day. So for work days, they would come in handy.

like i said, for PWO, you don't necessarily need the carbs IN the shake. If you're working out, and mix 50g of whey w/ milk, you're going to get around 66g of protein (50g from powder, 16g from milk), and then roughly 30g of carbs. You can just eat some fruit, honey, cereal, etc to go along with this.

Well, you don't necessarily need a gainer to go w/ your lunch. Pack a few meals, and then pack a few protein shakes. You can add some oils to the shakes, and make them slower digesting, or some fiber supplement. Oils would be better if you're bulking. Just mix the protein+milk+oils, and you have a high quality gainer.

It's ultimately up to you if you want to get a gainer or not. I'm just throwing some other easy suggestions out there.

Exactly what I was thinking...I wouldn't worry about getting the carbs from the actual protein mix. You can easily get an adequate amount of carbs from real food...

Also, not everything has to be kept in a lunch box. I would make alot of peanut butter and jelly/banana sanwhiches and eat those throughout the day when you're at work along with some fruit and other proteins.

So that said...Are you looking for a protein mix or something like a straight whey concentrate?

What kind of "oils" are you talking about?

Well I was looking at some of the Optimum Nutrion products and I really do like those. They are pretty cheep and seem really worthy. I was thinking about going with the 100% Natural Whey Gold Standard [] - $35.99 : Optimum Nutrition, The Bigger Picture.
