Eating and COLD
Wasn't sure if this should go in the "diet" area, or the general health area, but since it's food related, I figured I'd post it here.
Every time I eat - I get COLD - I mean really cold! My fingernails turn purple, my nose gets cold, heck the other night DH told me after dinner that my lips looked a little blue!
I am currently on a fat loss program (designed for me by Leigh Peele) and I sent her an email, too.
Any clues? Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks!

Tracey I answered your email but will put it here as well for others.
When we eat our blood pressure drops to some degree due to the blood pulling away from extremities to aid digestion. This is going to be mad worse by three things for you currently...
-Eating in a deficit
-Eating on average more protein/fats (as a higher carbohydrate diets leads to higher blood pressure overall in most cases)
-Restricting sodium to much with excess fluids
I would recommend making sure you have a proper sodium balance, meaning maybe add a little extra shake of salt to your meals and if able give a little movement after eating.

I meant to add the reason I bring up the sodium intake for you specifically is because I know how much you utilize teas to aid appetite suppression and all this excess fluid, while not harmful, could be throwing off sodium balance enough to aid in even lower blood pressure drops. So see if that helps, if not there are other avenues we can go.

Has this always happened? Just started happening? I know that a symptom of thyroid disorder is feeling cold after you eat. It seems like a pretty unusual symptom, so this post caught my eye. Not to worry you, but you may want to google it and check out the other symptoms for hypothyroidism. But I hope it's something simple and easily resolvable. =o)

Having a cold internal body temperature is what you should be concerned about not the actual feeling of cold. This is a common misconception. While the two can go hand in hand it is perfectly normal to feel cold after eating if you have a general low blood pressure and are in a deficit.
Be careful what you google when it comes to thyroid problems, most information is put forth by supplement companies and very little is backed by research or trial study.

Wow this is really interesting reading.... I know when I was in deficit my core was always cold but that is completely different than this.
Funny thing is that I am on a gain plan right now and when I eat I get hot sometimes. It's like I can feel the fire turning up.
Aren't our bodies the most amazing things?

It has only been a few years ago, when I would notice to get WARM after eating. I was like "either this is a new experience or I'm having severe memory loss" since for the life of me I can't remember ever getting warm after eating.
I don't remember either to get cold after eating, but it may have been possible.
What Leigh writes, makes perfect sense.
One can only know for sure whether or not the body temperature is really down versus feeling cold. Now I am tracking body temperature for 10 months already I do know there's sometimes a controversy between the 2. Viz. I may feel hot but not really be hot. Or I may feel cold and not be terribly cold.
Most of the time I do feel warmer after eating more, and esp. protein has this profound effect. Until quite recently, carbs never used to have this effect .. viz. I'd not feel warmer or colder. I'd even get warmer from fats than from carbs.
This seems to have reversed.
Definitely up your salt intake and hopefully the effect will go away. I'd recommend licorice (and/or licorice tea) since it has a well known blood pressure raising effect. This is bad bad news for someone with normal to high BP, but can actually be beneficial when blood pressure drops low. This can esp. happen on a low calorie diet.
Good luck! And thanks for posting up the thread. It contains invaluable info!

Wow! The EXACT same thing happens to me. Doesn't matter what the ambient temperature is in the room, I feel cold and fingers/lips turn blueish. I do have hypothryoid but it is well controlled with medication.
I have also had "low sodium levels" come up on random blood tests. Never low enough that doc was concerned but he keeps an eye on it to make sure doesn't go lower. I rarely use extra salt, and I eat mainly natural, whole foods so not getting much sodium in my diet. Maybe I will try adding a pinch or two of salt to my meals.
Just nice to know I am not "crazy" for this symptom that I didn't think anyone else had.

For the record, I'm knowing at least 2 others who have the same experience. The first is an online friend who's hypothyroid and also having adrenal fatigue. Her real body temperature is very low too, sometimes not even reaching 36°C at all. She gets cold after eating too.
My MIL also had this experience after eating. She had a quite severa auto-immune disease.
So, while not unique, it's certainly not a very healthy sign.
