Default Fructose stops glucose transport.

Someone asked this of me, but I don't have a complete accurate answer.

Obviously, fructose wouldn't be the ideal main source for carbs, but this is the first I am hearing of fructose causing the body to shut down glucose transport. I find it suspect, but I always concede to those who make it their profession to know.

Quote:

Does Aragon make any mention to the types of carbs you should be consuming during a workout. I was talking to a Prof at my school and she mentioned that it should NOT be fructose because it takes too long to convert to glucose and actually confuses the body. She claims the body is instantly told to shuttle the sugar to the liver to convert it to glucose so the body stops sending glucose to the muscles resulting in less energy. She also added Dextrose would be a much more efficient source of carbs during workout (like surge).

So does anyone have any in depth info on this?
I suspect Alan would still maintain a 1/3 fructose, 2/3 absorbable non-fructose carbs.

Alan, Cassandra, Jaime, others...thoughts, analysis, criticisms?

I know I am in the other category but...

The use of the word confusion is interesting, as fructose does perturb glucose metabolism and uptake, but to a small, small degree. Your liver glycogen levels are what signals the body as to if you are anabolic or catabolic, so if you put a small amount (1/3) of fructose in the body mixed with a (2/3) of Glucose in the body you have a filled storage in the liver killing a signal of catabolism post workout and MORE than enough glucose for deliver even if a small amount reaches a bit of metabolism confusion.

As Leigh mentioned liver glycogen is important for whole body anabolism or catabolism. Decreased liver glycogen increased gluconeogenesis.

The correct answer would be as with everything "it depends"

What is current level of muscle glycogen? What type of activity is being performed? What is status of Glut-4 transporters? IMTG usage and so on.

If you need to rapdily increase blood glucose yes dextrose or malto-dextrin will work fine.

As Alan has repeated numerous times it probably does not make a huge difference unless there are some time constraints placed on replenishment.

Knowledge and NOnsense and The Carbohydrate Files address carbohydrate metabolism at depth.

thanks
