Muscle Milk??
There has been a lot of talk in my gym recently about how wonderful Muscle Milk is and how it's a great post-workout drink, etc. I took a look at it while in GNC and I'm stunned. It has something like 18g of fat, 8 of which are saturated. Does anyone actually drink this stuff? How do you not get fat????

Muscle Milk isn't really a PWO nutrition drink.
However, I remember someone saying the fat in MM is MCTs (Medium Chain Triglycerides).
Perhaps someone can explain the signifigance of that better than I, but this person lead me to believe the fats will get burned up for energy readily.
I would recommend not using MM. It's more cost effective to make your own PWO drink from whey, milk, fruit, hersheys syrup, oats, etc.

Muscle Milk is basically a weight gainer. Most people drinking it would have a goal of putting on (or maintaining) weight.

yeah and even as a weight gainer, crap.
A good way to up calories is to add nat and nuts, higher fat cheeses, fatty fish, olive oil, etc. Basically, fatty foods and this is after you take care of the minimals.

I got hold of some for free, and I've been using it for the occasional meal replacement on the road, even while working to drop some fat.

I wouldn't classify MM as a "weight gainer." With 300ish cals per serving, it isn't really a weight gainer.

yeah I agree Kevin. You can also try MM light or Evopro if you are looking for the taste without so much of the fat/cals.

MM isn't really a gainer. it's an MPR. It's expensive, but i don't think it's crap. It's all in how it fits with the rest of your diet. You could make an MPR from the taking whey+oil. I would go the cheaper route and use real foods.

dudes,
What is the conclusion to Muscle Milk? Is it good, is it bad? What the F? One group says it's great another sh!tty? What do you guy(s) think?
Thanks, I always know I will get real answers from people that are respected in the field,

It depends on what you're using it for.
There are actually more calories from fat in muscle milk than there are calories from protein.
I believe there are about 16g of fat and 30g of protein.
This would provide roughly 120 calories from protein and 135 from fat.
So, it is not a "protein" drink. It is a meal replacement drink.
If something had more carbs than protein, no one would call it a protein drink, so muscle milk should be no different.
With that being said, the fat in muscle milk is pretty good fat. Mostly essential fatty acids.
The protein in muscle milk are very good.
They have a wonderful marketing strategy. No one else would have dared to put more fat than protein in a protein drink.
But, fat tastes great....and people never have a problem convincing themselves that something which tastes good is a good nutritional choice.
The calories in muscle milk will be much higher than the calories in a protein drink of 30g of protein...more than double the amount in fact.

Well...I did say basically.
My point was the only people I've seen talk about using it, are those who are looking to gain mass, so they're probably not too concerned that it has 18g of fat per serve.

I would probably go with PB and olive oil. The two would add a hefty amount of calories and a lot of good fats. I would think the PB would go farther toward a filling MRP, though.
I will still call MM crap, for the very reason that you can make the same for less.

I think it all comes down to laziness and convenience. Some people will pay for the conveinence of just caring around some powder and a shaker. Of course they could use a casein/whey mix and a handful of almonds as well.

There is that, of course. But I think that many people don't know what they're buying. In other words, they are not buying a "protein and fat" supplement... in their minds, they are buying "Muscle Milk", which is a formula to help grow muscles. "Almonds to grow muscles? Are you kidding?" A big part of the success of supplements is ignorance.

That's silly!! Everyone knows that Almonds grow Almond Trees, very similar to how Bazooka Joe grows bubblegum bushes.

i think a lot of it is convenience, but i think a lot of it too is that it tastes good. If they can drink shakes that taste like milkshakes, and they think that they are drinking something healthy, then they're going to do it.
Without a doubt, MM tastes better than a protein+flax shake.
