I have a strong dislike of all artificial sweeteners and was thinking of ordering some unsweetened chocolate and vanilla whey protein from trueprotein.com. Is that a bad idea? I'd rather add a small amount of real sugar (or just suffer with no sweetener) than choke down artificial sweetener. I've tried it before, but I just can't stand the aftertaste.

i really don't believe there's a big artificial aftertaste w/ the artificial sweeteners from TP. Maybe it's just me though? What kinds have you tried before? The new deluxe vanilla flavor is very good, and doesn't really have a chemical aftertaste to it.
Honestly, i've never tried their regular flavors, so i can't tell you if they're good or not. I've only tried their premium flavors, so i can't suggest that you buy something that i personally haven't tried. Sorry!

I'm hugely sensitive to sweeteners, both taste-wise and with funky physical symptoms. I just got some TrueProtein with Stevia and there's not any of that funk going on, either while drinking or as an aftertaste. Of course, it might just be covered up enough by the Bananas-on-Steroids taste all of the basic flavors have going on. FYI, I have tried Stevia in other things (tea, whipped cream, etc) recently and, yep, I do get the funky taste in everything else.

I haven't tried any of TP products yet, but I can pretty much taste artificial sweeteners in anything - gum, soda, toothpaste, you name it. I especially dislike aspartame and sucralose. I don't mind the initial taste of acesulfame, but it leaves a metallic aftertaste that lasts for hours.
Nutbar, I have not tried Stevia but have heard it can have an unpleasant bitter aftertaste, so I'm not sure about trying it.
I realize I'm not the norm, that's why I was asking about the unsweetened flavored protein!

Amblus, unless you intend to be able to have it anytime of the day, I wouldn't worry about artificial sweetners and just get it sweetened with dextrose.
However, this makes it inappropriate for dietary use outside of the workout period.

I do understand. I was terribly scared to try it myself because I'm the exact same way with artificial sweeteners. I'll be happy to send you a couple of scoops of my Stevia-sweetened whey if you'd like to try it, just PM me with an address. If you do order True Protein without unsweetened, you not only have to choose "plain" from the drop-down menu on each but you also have to write "no sweeteners" in the comment box or they will assume you made a mistake and add in a default sweetener. That's what customer service told me when I was quizzing them about unsweetened.

Hey, now we're talking! This would be strictly for PWO useage, so real actual sugar-sweetened would be ideal. Any brand recommendations? I didn't see dexatrose listed as an option on TP (though maybe I'm just missing it? I'll have to look again.)
Nutbar, thank you so much for the offer! I may take you up on that.

Oh, thank you! I hadn't actually checked out the "create your own" section, I was just clicking on various products.

Here's something I am discovering...
I use ON whey. It's 24g/scp, TP's is 23g/scp IF THERE IS NO ADDITIONS. That means, as soon as you start adding dextrose, the g/scp drops.
My ON is sweetened with sucralose, which you said you can't stand.
If you're wanting to get maximum protein/scp, you may want to get it w/o ANY adidtives other than the basic flavors. Then sweeten it to taste with what you want. Do you like honey? Honey is good. Oats are good. Sucrose is glucose and fructose. You could even get dextrose seperate and sweeten it with that as you make up your PWO drink.
There are plenty of options to explore.
There is also the ideal g/bw that Aragon and Berardi expound on, so you might want to see what is ideal for you and formulate your custom mix according to that.
Many ways to get the job done.

Thanks again. I started fiddling with the percentages on the custom mix page and got really confused because of that exact thing - the more stuff you add, the less the percentage of protein. I think you're probably right - buying the unsweeetened is the way to go for me. I do like honey just fine and I think that would work.
I love how I've made protein powder the most confusing part of my workout. Go me!

you can just order the protein, and the dextrose/malto separately as well. Just order the protein from the protein section/ or custom mixes, and then order the dextrose/malto from the carb section.
I agree w/ cynic. I like mixing my own stuff. Any carb source will do.

So far, I've tried:
Kiwi-Strawberry: Tastes like baby food banana crap.
Strawberry-Banana: Tastes like sweeter, stronger baby food banana crap.
Pina Colada: Tastes like baby food banana crap with a hint of maybe pineapple (best downed while listening to Jimmy Buffet).
Not yet tried:
Mango
Tropical Blend
Wild Berry
I assume they're all going to taste rather like baby food banana crap but, if any actually taste good, I'll let you know. At least they mix well, I can get them down, and they don't come back up. No funky Stevia aftertaste, either. Just bananas. Lots and lots of bananas. I'm going to have nightmares about bananas.
(I so wish they'd get around to offering premiums with Stevia.)
*walks off humming the theme song to "Bananas in Pajamas"*

For the sake of completeness:
I've now tried the Mango, Tropical Blend, and Wild Berry. They actually do not have the banana flavor that the others do (not that there's much else for taste in them). However, I can taste the Stevia in them. Blech.

I have no idea. Might just be my twisted taste buds but they sure do seem to have a banana taste to me.

Alright I decided to re-up my protein supply. I just ordered 10 pounds of CMDI with the premium flavorings of vanilla, orange cream, and strawberry cream. Can't wait to try them out.
Thanks for the 5% discount alcholiday.
