I have a strong dislike of all artificial sweeteners and was thinking of ordering some unsweetened chocolate and vanilla whey protein from trueprotein.com. Is that a bad idea? I'd rather add a small amount of real sugar (or just suffer with no sweetener) than choke down artificial sweetener. I've tried it before, but I just can't stand the aftertaste.
i really don't believe there's a big artificial aftertaste w/ the artificial sweeteners from TP. Maybe it's just me though? What kinds have you tried before? The new deluxe vanilla flavor is very good, and doesn't really have a chemical aftertaste to it.
Honestly, i've never tried their regular flavors, so i can't tell you if they're good or not. I've only tried their premium flavors, so i can't suggest that you buy something that i personally haven't tried. Sorry!

I'm hugely sensitive to sweeteners, both taste-wise and with funky physical symptoms. I just got some TrueProtein with Stevia and there's not any of that funk going on, either while drinking or as an aftertaste. Of course, it might just be covered up enough by the Bananas-on-Steroids taste all of the basic flavors have going on. FYI, I have tried Stevia in other things (tea, whipped cream, etc) recently and, yep, I do get the funky taste in everything else.

I haven't tried any of TP products yet, but I can pretty much taste artificial sweeteners in anything - gum, soda, toothpaste, you name it. I especially dislike aspartame and sucralose. I don't mind the initial taste of acesulfame, but it leaves a metallic aftertaste that lasts for hours.
Nutbar, I have not tried Stevia but have heard it can have an unpleasant bitter aftertaste, so I'm not sure about trying it.
I realize I'm not the norm, that's why I was asking about the unsweetened flavored protein!
Amblus, unless you intend to be able to have it anytime of the day, I wouldn't worry about artificial sweetners and just get it sweetened with dextrose.
However, this makes it inappropriate for dietary use outside of the workout period.

I do understand. I was terribly scared to try it myself because I'm the exact same way with artificial sweeteners. I'll be happy to send you a couple of scoops of my Stevia-sweetened whey if you'd like to try it, just PM me with an address. If you do order True Protein without unsweetened, you not only have to choose "plain" from the drop-down menu on each but you also have to write "no sweeteners" in the comment box or they will assume you made a mistake and add in a default sweetener. That's what customer service told me when I was quizzing them about unsweetened.

Hey, now we're talking! This would be strictly for PWO useage, so real actual sugar-sweetened would be ideal. Any brand recommendations? I didn't see dexatrose listed as an option on TP (though maybe I'm just missing it? I'll have to look again.)
Nutbar, thank you so much for the offer! I may take you up on that.

Here, down below the section of proteins is the carbos.
Oh, thank you! I hadn't actually checked out the "create your own" section, I was just clicking on various products.
Here's something I am discovering...
I use ON whey. It's 24g/scp, TP's is 23g/scp IF THERE IS NO ADDITIONS. That means, as soon as you start adding dextrose, the g/scp drops.
My ON is sweetened with sucralose, which you said you can't stand.
If you're wanting to get maximum protein/scp, you may want to get it w/o ANY adidtives other than the basic flavors. Then sweeten it to taste with what you want. Do you like honey? Honey is good. Oats are good. Sucrose is glucose and fructose. You could even get dextrose seperate and sweeten it with that as you make up your PWO drink.
There are plenty of options to explore.
There is also the ideal g/bw that Aragon and Berardi expound on, so you might want to see what is ideal for you and formulate your custom mix according to that.
Thanks again. I started fiddling with the percentages on the custom mix page and got really confused because of that exact thing - the more stuff you add, the less the percentage of protein. I think you're probably right - buying the unsweeetened is the way to go for me. I do like honey just fine and I think that would work.
I love how I've made protein powder the most confusing part of my workout. Go me!
you can just order the protein, and the dextrose/malto separately as well. Just order the protein from the protein section/ or custom mixes, and then order the dextrose/malto from the carb section.
I agree w/ cynic. I like mixing my own stuff. Any carb source will do.

I ordered several pounds so whey protein concentrate (from TrueProtein) this past weekend and it arrived yesterday. I have issues with a lot of artificial sweeteners so the following are all sweetened with Stevia -- which also means they're all the basic flavors. (Stevia is not available for the premiums.)
So far, I've tried:
Kiwi-Strawberry: Tastes like baby food banana crap.
Strawberry-Banana: Tastes like sweeter, stronger baby food banana crap.
Pina Colada: Tastes like baby food banana crap with a hint of maybe pineapple (best downed while listening to Jimmy Buffet).
Not yet tried:
Mango
Tropical Blend
Wild Berry
I assume they're all going to taste rather like baby food banana crap but, if any actually taste good, I'll let you know. At least they mix well, I can get them down, and they don't come back up. No funky Stevia aftertaste, either. Just bananas. Lots and lots of bananas. I'm going to have nightmares about bananas.
(I so wish they'd get around to offering premiums with Stevia.)
*walks off humming the theme song to "Bananas in Pajamas"*
For the sake of completeness:
I've now tried the Mango, Tropical Blend, and Wild Berry. They actually do not have the banana flavor that the others do (not that there's much else for taste in them). However, I can taste the Stevia in them. Blech.
Alright I decided to re-up my protein supply. I just ordered 10 pounds of CMDI with the premium flavorings of vanilla, orange cream, and strawberry cream. Can't wait to try them out.

Thanks for the 5% discount alcholiday.
Isn't the CMDI's proportions of protein types (80% casein and 20% whey) considered to be ideal or near ideal?

That is what I had heard. I was wanting to get a solid milk protein powder. I had ordered their MPI ($7.89 / pound...not too shabby) before and had a rough time with it. Most of it was my own fault, I order it flavorless and didn't order enough flavoring on the side to make it sweet enough. The one element that was out of my control was that it didn't mix very well at all unless you blended it, then it was superb. But I don't have the time blend up all my shakes partly due to having a young child in the house and only being able to use the blender during "select" times.
I decided to go with the CMDI because it is supposed to mix up much better than the MPI....otherwise I would have just ordered MPI and dealt with it. The MPI is 80/20 as well.
I'm a vegetarian, but trying to gets a lot of protein is tough and includes a LOT of dairy. So I ordered some Gemma protein isolate from TrueProtein last week, sweetened with Stevia. Right now I am trying the chocolate, and it's OK. I got strawberry too. I am planning on using this more for snacks (mixed with greek yogurt right now), and baking than for PWO, I plan to stick with whey for that. But I thought I'd chime in.
I can't taste the Stevia, but I have never had issues with Stevia. It is a little chalky, but...eh, what can you really expect from peas, right?
Anyway, just thought I'd give my review for the veg's out there who may want to limit the whey/soy in their diets.
good to hear you like them. i'm getting low on protein myself, so i may have to order some more soon!
did you like the dutch fudge? I thought it was a little too rich tasting for me.
i love it. i like adding a banana to it...so its not as rich...but yea, i hear what your saying. at times, it can be a bit rich haha...but its all good.
i'm finding the mango to be really versatile though. i put it in my oatmeal this morning

i've heard that this protein is very "interesting" hehe. I guess it's not as bad as egg protein though.
Have you tried isolate before? I haven't, so i can't really comment on it, but here's what the description said...
Quote:
True Protein’s Whey Protein Isolate Microfiltration is derived from whey protein concentrate, but ultimately from sweet dairy whey. Isolates, Microfiltration Cold-Filtration and Ion-Exchange, are protein powders that are the next steps to further process whey protein concentrate. The Microfiltration process is a procedure of separating the proteins through the use of filters. These filters allow the protein to be removed from the unwanted fat, lactose and the like. Microfiltration Isolate is virtually fat free and lactose (sugar) free.
so it's lactose free, so you may be able to digest it better if you have a hard time w/ dairy. I'm not sure if you meant this, or if you just don't consume dairy products.
thanks for the review.

So I know its been awhile since I said I would keep you posted on how my Milk Protein Isolate Premium chocolate banana tastes but midterms took over my life for a little bit...anyway it tastes GREAT...have only tried it with milk but I will try it with water tonight and let you know how it goes...
So I tried it with water last night and it definately wasn't as good but it was still very drinkable, a little chalkier with just the water. To what an early post said about MPI not mixing well, mine seems to mix fine. Right now I'm just mixing it bottled water bottles, feeling too lazy right now to clean my shakers, I give it a good shake for about 20-30 seconds and Im good to go, no clumps so far...
I've just been using EAS's 100% Whey Protein (Vanilla) in a shaker with Vanilla. I use it strictly as a PWO shake, and I need to get more... can somebody give me a suggestion of what to buy from TP?

I personally just use Whey concentrate from there with premium flavors. I've heard good things about their isolate (it's supposed to be "cleaner" tasting), team skip, and dante's blend. IMO though, if you've just been getting concentrate, and are happy with that, i'd just stick with the whey concentrate, and then get some premium flavor of vanilla, strawberry and cream, and orange cream. Those are my personal favorites.

i just got some of DC's blend from TP. It's very good. It has a lot cleaner taste than concentrate, and doesn't have any sort of bitterish after taste to it. The shakes are around the same consistency as concentrate.
I just tried the orange juice premium flavor (not the orange cream). I really like it. It tastes a lot like tang, or a orange drink, and less creamy than orange cream. Very clean and refreshing.
