i posted this question on the forums, so i'll see if i can get you an answer.

I just ask them to divide the protein in some flavors. Let's say I had to buy 5 lbs, I'd ask for 2 lbs of Dutch Chocolate, 2 lbs of Vanilla and 1 lb Orange Creamsicle.

Alcoholiday helped me find out more about Trueprotein -- here are my takeaways:

The flavor sample packs only include Whey Protein Isolate (Cold Filtration) and the flavor packet. That's it. No carbohydrate additions or sweeteners. If you want to recreate the sample flavors, only order WPI (Cold Filtration) and the flavor.

I wanted to make PWO shakes with my order, so I did a custom mix with this:

-- Whey Protein Isolate (10%)
-- Whey Protein Concentrate (30%)
-- Maltodextrin (25%)
-- Dextrose (25%)
-- Glutamine peptides (5%)
-- BCAAs (5%)
-- No additional sweetener

This made each scoop equal to 15g protein / 15 g carbs. And I'll be honest and say it tastes totally disgusting. I ordered both Orange Creamsicle and Strawberry-Banana, and both were delicious in the sample packets. But when I changed the protein from WPI to WPC, added malto and dextrose, and added glutamine and BCAAs, it was just way too much blandness and bitterness that the flavoring couldn't rescue.

Lessons learned!

1) For protein, use WPI (Cold Filtration). It dissolves better and tastes better than Whey Protein Concentrate.
2) If you want to add carbs, stick to dextrose. It dissolves better and tastes much better than maltodextrin.
3) Don't add other stuff (glutamine, BCAAs) to the mix. If you want to add it at home, fine. But if you add it to your pre-mixed order and don't like it, you're screwed.

That's unfortunate Lefty, because using Cold-filtered WPI drives the cost way up, over the cost of ON, again.

ON being $7.50/lb.
TP CFWPI being $9.39/lb, minimum. Add a premium flavor and it's over $10/lb.

are you sure? I'm pretty sure that my flavor pack samples WERE sweetened. I know I just mixed them up and they tasted fine. I got the separate flavors when I ordered my plain whey and in combination they work fine as well. So that part is true - but I cannot believe there is no sweetener. I have other (LorAnn) flavorings that I know are flavor only - and those with the whey are blech - need to be sweetened.

You're correct; the premium flavor packs already include sucralose in them according to the website.

That's part of what keeps confusing me. When you order a protein with a pre-mixed premium flavor, you still have the option to add sweetener. I assume that's above and beyond the sucralose already included in the flavor pack?

yea, i don't know what it could be.

I thought it might be the bcaas added to it? Those have a naturally bitter taste, so that MIGHT be it.

I get the whey concentrate unflavored, and the flavor packs separate, and they taste delicious.

I'm not sure about the sweetener with the premium flavors like you did. Plus, you added malto and dextrose to it, which SHOULD make it a little sweeter, even though malto isn't that sweet.

I think it HAS to be the bcaas. There's nothing else that would really give it a bitter taste like you're talking about.

If i were you, i would try contacting the TP people directly, and asking them this question. Either contact them through the Q&A, or go to their forums and ask them at: True Protein Forums | High Quality Nutrition and Protein Supplements - Powered by vBulletin

Tell them that you're unhappy with the protein as it doesn't taste right. They might offer you a replacement? It's worth a shot.

Ordered a few of the shaker cups so it's so much more convenient to have a shake at work.

I've heard good things about the turbo shakers.

I have two Blender Bottles and they perform well.

Otherwise, I tend to hate shaker bottles as being worthless for shaking up some wheys.

i like the shaker bottles where you can take all the things apart on it. I've had some before where the rings didn't come off of them, so you can't get them cleaned. I've also had some that i lost the rings on them, and then they spilled.

Then a couple questions:

1. Whose shaker bottle?
2. Whose whey?

Cynic, I use EAS's 100% Whey with both an EliteFTS shaker and have used just a water bottle in some cases. Always mixes up easily and completely.

Both are from trueprotein.com - the protein is a custom mix with chocolate BSL added.

so i ordered some more protein and creatine from TP. I got the new strawberry and creme, vanilla, and chocolate banana flavors, as well as a batch of orange creme.

I have to say the strawberry and vanilla flavors are both very very good. I like how the vanilla is more of a vanilla bean flavor than a vanilla. Tastes a lot more "natural."

The orange creme, i got flavored already. It tastes completely normal, so i'm not sure what happened to red's batch. It has to have been the bcaas he added to it or something? I'm still stumped about that.

Did you order whey concetrate or the iso?

I ordered some whey isolate from True Protein a few weeks ago (thanks for the discount code alcoholiday) and I have no complaints. We got the vanilla and orange creme flavors. I love the orange cream and the vanilla is as good as any vanilla I have had. We are planning to get some whey/casein blend to use for non PWO needs and will probably get some more flavors at the same time. I can't wait for that cake batter flavor to come out!

ETA: My fiance I think is less of a fan of the orange cream than me. Maybe it just isn't some people's cup of tea. I made a shake for breakfast one day using the orange cream flavor and added some almonds and she liked that (it was a pretty good combo).

In the interest of full disclosure:

I got one of the blends that includes casein - I think it might have been milk protein but I'd have to check the order to be sure. I got unsweetend, unflavored just like the WPI-cold that I had used before.

I don't like it very much. The texture is too chalky and it has a taste I don't care for. I haven't used any since my first shake attempt.

I think before I try anything "new" again I will ask for a sample first to see if I even like it. I didn't know I would be so picky.

that sucks. I think that's the usual major complaint with casein, is that it's so chalky. I guess a lot of people love whey protein isolate cold filtered, or something like that, because it is a very smooth flavor.

For me though, i go to order the stuff, and i look at stuff like isolate, and it's 9 bucks a pound where concentrate is 5 something a pound. Then i start to think to myself, how much better do you think this stuff really is? I could basically get 6 pounds of protein (concentrate) for the price i could get 3 pounds of isolate. For me, that's a big difference, so i just always stick with concentrate.

Everyone says concentrate has a sort of bitter aftertaste, and i can kind of see it, but it's not something where i would stop buying it after i'd used it for YEARS.

Don't try that new protein they have that's derived from veggies (gemma protein). I heard it's AWFUL. I've also heard the egg protein is pretty bad. If i wanted egg protein i'd eat eggs!

yea, it's pretty good. tastes exactly like chocolate and banana. I still think my favorites are probably the orange creme, vanilla, and strawberry. I didn't really like the dutch fudge one, but everyone else did, so who knows?

I only got the WPI-cold because that's what was in the flavor samples and I knew it would be the same. I was going to try the whey conc. the next time "just to see" - but picked the milk protein for some reason. Now I'm a little wary and would go sample of whey conc. next time before I buy a pound of it. I don't have that much room in the cupboard.

yea, i know what you mean. I've never tried the casein before. But, you could always ask w/ your next order if they'd throw in like a scoop or two of WPC b/c you've never tried it? Even if they don't, the good thing is that WPC is cheap (like 5 bucks/pound), so if you don't like it, you could just throw it out.

I really don't see how you couldn't like WPC though. i've had isolate shakes before (metrx), and wpc is pretty close.

I'll let you all know how MPI tastes

It breaks down to 80% casein, 20% whey

I got the premium chocolate banana, so will let you how the premium flavor mixed with casein taste.

I ordered several pounds so whey protein concentrate (from TrueProtein) this past weekend and it arrived yesterday. I have issues with a lot of artificial sweeteners so the following are all sweetened with Stevia -- which also means they're all the basic flavors. (Stevia is not available for the premiums.)

So far, I've tried:

Kiwi-Strawberry: Tastes like baby food banana crap.
Strawberry-Banana: Tastes like sweeter, stronger baby food banana crap.
Pina Colada: Tastes like baby food banana crap with a hint of maybe pineapple (best downed while listening to Jimmy Buffet).

Not yet tried:

Mango
Tropical Blend
Wild Berry

I assume they're all going to taste rather like baby food banana crap but, if any actually taste good, I'll let you know. At least they mix well, I can get them down, and they don't come back up. No funky Stevia aftertaste, either. Just bananas. Lots and lots of bananas. I'm going to have nightmares about bananas.

(I so wish they'd get around to offering premiums with Stevia.)

*walks off humming the theme song to "Bananas in Pajamas"*

*walks off humming the theme song to "Bananas in Pajamas"*
that's too bad about the artificial sweetener, and the flavors.

I know that TP is eventually going to do away with their flavors, and then only have their premiums. So the premiums will be the default. I'm guessing when they do that, that they'll work to get the natural flavors in the premiums, but i'm just guessing.
