Default ZMA or Calcium/Zinc/Magnesium

My recovery from recent workouts is starting to slip. Mostly, I believe, because I am sleeping like crap again. So I am considering goinn back on ZMA. But a friend of mine recently started taking a combo supp of Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc. He says he is getting much better sleep and is also experiencing the wicked dreams that accompany this mix. Anyone have an opinion of evidence of which would be best. ZMA or a calcium/Magnesium/Zinc supp

Unless I'm greatly mistaken, calcium inhibits the uptake of zinc... and magnesium. Perhaps Alan or cycomiko can back this up or refute it. Many articles I've read mention avoiding calcium in the hours close to taking a zinc supplement, and I believe (but am less sure about) the same holds true for magnesium.

I would agree. Zinc is a vitamin that battles for attention from other vitamins.

Have you ever taken 5-HTP (from tryptophan)?

Yes it is. Having worked at Vitamin World part-time for many years, I've heard everything from fish oil to protein powders referred to as "vitamins".

If Calcium should not be taken with Zinc why would someone sale a supplement with those two in them?

Stores also sell NO2, topical fat-burners and "special" proteins with "1000% the absorption".

First of all, doctors aren't usually/often very good with the supplements. I've had some people tell me at VW that their doctor sent them there to "ask the person that works there" about certain supps.

Secondly, I could be wrong about the cal/mag mix.

Yeah, docs aren't always on the leading edge. I wouldn't be, either, if I worked 70-hour weeks taking care of patients.

A while ago I went to my eye doc, one of the best in Houston, for help with dry eyes after LASIK surgery. After we'd exhausted most treatments with no improvement, he said:

"Michael, I've got one more idea. It's gonna sound crazy. Have you ever heard of 'fish oil' supplements?"

"Uhhh... yeah. I've been taking at least 5 daily grams of combined EPA/DHA for more than two years."

"Oh. Nevermind then."

Calcium can reduce zinc uptake, but it takes large doses of calcium, especially in the presence of phytic acid.
Only a tmagger would get obsessive about calcium taken around zinc.

The only studies I can find in reference to this also mention 'high' doses.

I just mentioned that cause I knew YOU would be reading along as well.

Rookie/cycomiko: What kind of doses are we talking about? What if I have a 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1/2 cup yogurt and a scoop of whey?

What about certain supps that have 1000mg?

The area from research is 1-2000mg doses

Phytic acid binds calcium and zinc.
