Default Kids, sugar, and the "sugar rush"

My kids don't seem to get hyper after candy or sugary crap, but I sure notice it in some other kids. Not all, though.

What's the real deal here. It takes all of 5 minutes for the kids to be hyper and spazzing out. That seems a little fast for a metabolic effect. Maybe it's some sort of hormone release or psychological thing.

Anybody?

We thought we saw sugar rushes in one of our kids, but all the credible research says no.

My son is almost 3. When he eats something like ice cream or a cookie, he gets crazy. It's not a bad thing, but it's absolutely noticeable. I wouldn't imagine it's psychological programming because he's just a little guy and he doesn't eat sugar all that often. He eats a pretty healthy diet, but gets "treats" such as ice cream or chocolate on a regular basis.

Maybe it's just because ice cream = happiness! I love it too.

I agree that it's all psychological. What we shouldn't do is reinforce the concept of being "hyper," because then kids act that way because they think that they are supposed to.

It doesnt take much to reinforce a behaviour in a kid. Just one occurance will set it in place to be repeatable.

But its not just the kids, its how the parents influence the kids as well. If the parent behaves a certain way because they think the kid will "sugar rush", then the kids can pick up on this and alter their behaviour.

But then my kids do not have sugar rushes or anything similar, they are nuts all of the time.

Ice cream sends my daughter absolutely nuts, for hours. But other sugary stuff doesn't have the same effect.
It has no effect on my son. But he doesn't really like ice cream so he probably doesn't eat as much in one go.

It certainly wasn't learnt behaviour in my daughters case. She was pretty young when we first gave her ice cream after dinner and it was about midnight when she finally stopped.
Weird

Isn't that weird. It's mostly ice cream with my son too.
