Accelerade?
I just saw a commercial for this new sports drink Accelerade. Has anyone tried it?

It tasted good when I tried it.
It's likely better than pure carb drinks like Gatorade, since Accelerade contains some protein. But, make sure to use it in practice first to make sure you can stomach it.
BTW, it's by the same guys that wrote the book "Nutrient Timing" and launched products based on their book's theories.

Accelerade has been around for a while now (at least a decade). Ask any guy in the cycling forum and they'll know about it. They were the first to quantify the benefits of 1:4 protein to carb ratio (which is what their drink is) for endurance athletes.
The stuff does work if you do a lot of endurance work (if your stomach can handle the protein while you are working out), at least IMHO. Also a great PWO, albeit with not enough protein (so I add whey protein to it, along with an amino acid supp for a phenomenal post-endurance workout recovery drink).

I buy Accelerade for my son to drink when he plays tournament baseball, catching two to three games in one day outside in the heat. It makes a big difference. It's formulated for endurance work, so use it accordingly (or modify it like Kaiser). He doesn't like the taste of the fruit punch Accelerade as much as he does fruit punch Gatorade, but he'll drink it when I mix it for him and send it in his cooler. If he's only playing one game, he just has a Gatorade and lots of water.

I have 3 huge tubs of Accelerade in my cabinet right now, I've been using it for about 2 1/2 years for my endurance stuff. I freaking love it. And now, 7-11 sells it in single servings, which is awesome for me in a pinch.

I wish I would have known about this stuff earlier. I have a soccer tournament coming up, might see if I can stomach it before and see how I like it.

Lisa, they've come out with new flavors this year including Lemon Lime and Orange. I am using the Mountain Berry flavor and it is much better tasting than the Fruit Punch to me. I actually enjoy drinking it, meaning I'm apt to drink more and stay fully hydrated.

HA! Nope. I just have to push the nutrition part of things for him. That doesn't come as easily for him as the rest.
Kaiser, when this container of fruit punch is gone, I'll try out the Mt. Berry. Thanks for telling me about it.

Accelerade IP is now owned by Cadbury's, and they are investing a truck load of cash into competing with the big boys in the endurance sport area.
To quote one of the recent press releases on the subject

It was origonally setup with Pacific Health Laboratories, under some relatively dubious research, but at least they have been doing something unlike most companies. They also developed the patent for the 1:4 ratio of protein to carbs.

Thanks again for all the info, I did however think of a new question.
What is considered 'endurance' ? Is the anything longer than 30 minutes considered to be endurance anymore? I regularly run around 3-7 miles a day, not including playing soccer or whatever other thing I'm doing for the day. So a 30 minute run is not a big deal unless I am racing it. Now in a soccer game come half time, I've usually been sprinting most of the game. What might be endurance for some one else, I might consider a warm up. Do I go by what I personally consider endurance, or if the 30 minutes is endurance training mentality is still around would it be beneficial to take it based on time?

I would classify true endurance as anything >1hr.
If you are doing a shorter session, carbohdyrate is still important, its jsut not as important to take it in during the event. Once you start getting into the 2-3hr events is where you need to think about dosing during the event.
Something like soccer is usually classified as intermittant activity, as you are never going at it constantly for the entire match.
You sprint, recover, sprint, recover, but of course is variable depending on which member of the team you are in. Similar with Hockey and in some ways Rugby.
