I work at a Tim Hortons on Sundays and I have to echo Og's statements. It its like crack to some people. We have customers that come in 3-4x a day to get x-large coffees. I have had people tell me they get the shakes when they haven't had a coffee in a couple hours.
I think the grossest thing I have seen was someone come in and order a medium coffee with 10 cream and 8 sugar then wanted a shot of butter-caramel flavour and whipped topping. It was basically a cup of cream with like a half an inch of coffee and then all the other crap added on.

Just to clarify, I was somewhat making a joke, based on my own feelings about food. I do not think it is sad that they feel this way about food, but it's unfortunate.
The more emotional responses one gets from food, the more likely one is to turn to it for comfort. People who feel this strongly about food also feel this strongly about many other things, but sometimes can't get them. It's not a substitute, really. It's more of a peek into their lusty heart and soul.
I don't feel this way about coffee or any treat from Starbucks, but some foods can have their way with me. I decline to post my list here, though.

And yet, coffee (addictive) isn't criminalized but ephedra (non-addictive) is criminalized why?

I ordered some pre-ground stuff. Yeah, sucks, I know. Maybe I can do it some justice by getting a percolator. Coffee grounds are coffee grounds, right?

No, I'm frequenting a coffee shop (no , not the normal Dutch coffee shop where they actually serve you weed/marihuana, but a real specialty coffee bean & tea shop), and they have the very best cappucino/espresso imaginable. You can actually make a choice out of 6 different types.
Since I can't have dairy, it's always just a plain espresso, but it's delightful nonetheless. The best part: it's only half the price of what a regular coffee place costs and yet tastes 2-3 times better. Reason being of course that making coffee is not a core business, selling the beans and the coffee machines is.

I'm back home for a short visit and called to ask my parents to pick up a Tim Hortons coffee for me from the next town over. It's tasty yes. But you can certainly get a bad cup. If I drink it too frequently it gives me headaches just thinking about it, not any other coffee just TH. An interesting note I once read is that they brew all their coffee with soft water...

A percolator! Haha. If there was any silver lining to Hurricane Katrina, it's that she destroyed my in-laws' percolator. I won't ever have to drink that nasty percolated coffee again.

Tim Horton's coffee is garbage. It sucks!
The people who like it are the ones who put double cream (18% !!) and double sugar or more, and that hides the taste of the shitty cheap coffee.

You're exaggarating but indeed, I've never really felt that Tim Horton coffee was any good. Their donuts were pretty delish though
And Starbucks back then rocked my world. However, quite likely it was all the schtuff they put into the coffee that made it taste so good. Had I tasted nothing else but the coffee, like I do nowadays with the espressos I get from the local 'coffee heaven' , I might have spit on it's low-grade quality.
The machine does make a huge difference. Why else does nearly every single espresso or cappucino that I order in Italy taste wonderful without any fancy additions? They all have hyoooge espresso machines, just like that coffee bean shop I'm going to. One of these days I will buy a machine of my own. Or perhaps not, as it's a nice routine to stop at the shop for a cup of unadultered honest-to-goodness espresso made on an excellent espresso machine from the freshest beans.
Now I shall share my own coffee-cocoa-chocolate concoction:
- pour into a large cup 2 sachets of instant coffee , if possible with a flavour (I have mocha , used to also have caramel)
- add 2 heaping teaspoons of Dutch cocoa (preferably Droste)
- add sweetener to desire, either artificial or real sugar /honey
Pour on boiling water.
Add 2 small squares (2x4 grams) of 72% chocolate and stir.
Wait till it's cooled down enough to drink.
Or, if you prefer, wait with the chocolate, and place 1 tablet in your mouth and let the coffee washing over it, melt it.
Occasionally, instead of the extra chocolate I'll add a table spoon of shredded coconut, especially good prior to lifting coz' of the MCT's. Very nice mouth feeling indeed.
And, weird as it may sound, it's also yummy to sweeten it with a table spoon of raisins. Discovered the queen of raisins : green raisins from Iran. They aren't sun-dried but shade-dried, so they don't turn brown.
That's my daily home-made piece of heaven. Tons cheaper than Starbuck and less calorific too. Also has tons of anti-oxidants as well as stimulants and brain-sharpeners.

I did get a little carried away with poking fun at her - sorry if it came off as offensive to anyone.
Although it's not polite to make fun of people and compare them to predators of the Serengeti , I do think it's natural to be turned off by gluttony. Obese people certainly do have the right to enjoy their food, just like anyone else. But enjoying it in excess is simply unattractive (figuratively and literally).
The woman who always ordered the 2,500 calorie latte wasn't obese - just on her way. But seeing her enjoy this much excess was disturbing.
Anyway, I'm not trying to defend my language earlier. It was better suited for a locker room than a public forum.

WHOA... this is not at all what I was saying. Enjoying food is one thing and I'm all for enjoying good food. But there is a line that is crossed when you start replacing food for love or sex. I know, I crossed that line a long time ago, and now am in the process of repairing my body for having crossed it.

There was a clip on TV last night from some show, "Confessions of a matchmaker" I think. The lady told a guy, "You have chosen donuts over sex." He would rather sit and eat crap than be in half decent shape to be able to more easily attract a woman.

This is exactly what I am talking about. She chooses food over an intimate relationship with a man because she got badly hurt by her ex-husband. It's a learned response - her father died when she was a teen, and her mom fed her to make her happy. I learned a similar response from my mother - not happy = eat to soothe the feeling or feel loved. Its a hard habit to break.
