I'd be interested to know if Mike or Alan have any opinions about Advocare, but I can tell you what I think of them. There is a big Advocare multi-level marketing hierarchy in my area. Several of the people up and down the line have asked me to sell these products. As a respected trainer in my area, I could have a lot of influence on their sales if I decided to recommend these products. They pushed me pretty hard. It took a lot to get them to show me ingredient lists and full price lists, but I am not going to recommend products based on flashy sales brochures with picture of football players and other athletes who say the stuff is good! That's not enough for me!

What I concluded is that Advocare products appear to have good, quality ingredients but they are way overpriced. If you want to take the time to do just a little research, you can find a comparable product for much less cost, usually online and probably not all from one source.

Eating thoughtfully and using supplements wisely works and some of the Advocare sales people are in great shape, but so are lots of other people who eat thoughtfull and use supplements wisely.

The people who buy into the Advocare hype truly begin to believe that there's some special magic about Advocare in particular. It's frustrating to me to have conversations with gym members who are buying these products and just swearing by them. I know that they work, but there is always a comparable product that will work equally well and not cost so much! What Advocare has that other products don't have is great marketing--and you pay a premium for it.

If you have the money and want to pay for personal service and the convience of getting all your products from one source and having someone deliver your products, then you certainly have the right to spend your money in this way. But you don't have to spend this much money to get quality products.

I actually have a friend of mine who consistently pushes me to sell Advocare supplements, but I haven't had the time to look into them. However, having been repsposible for selling supplements in a commercial facility (Apex), I can reassure that the company teaches you how to market their product well. Too well...in fact. My friend has become so....ENGULFED with selling advocare, that we cannot manage a 15 minute conversation without him bringing it up. Its as if, he is "brainwashed".

As for Lisa's point, marketing is done well across the board--for trainers, products, and books. Market a product well enough (get everyone to repeat it, feature consistently, make it sound like its the best thing) and people WILL believe the hype--when in reality its no different than anything else on the market. The marketing IS the 'magic'. And WE all fall for it.

Not to hijack, but has anyone heard of USANA products? I had someone at my job offer me a business opportunity and swears by these products. They have protein powders, vitamins, skin care, etc..

I pretty much think all multilevel nutritional products are overpriced and overhyped. But if they were cheap, how would the MLMers get any commissions? There are always cheaper, better alternatives without middleman fees & requisite bullshit fluff.

Same multi level marketing..

I had a good friend get into selling this stuff, he spent alot of money getting the stuff, and made almost none back. As far as USANA, at the time they wouldnt even give out whats in everything! they might now. It actually seemed like half decent stuff, but the price was insane, $5 powerbars and such.. He tried to get me, and a hell of a lot of people on it to.

Yeah, I figured. I dont want to take the stuff, just seeing about the business end of it. But from how I feel and what everyone is saying, I dont think I will be pursuing it to make money.

Was going to start a thread about Advocare, but found this one and just wanted to bring it back up to see if anyone had anything new to add. I was contacted by someone asking if I'd be interested in becoming a sales consultant. I'm always leary about something that involves a lot of marketing, plus I don't consider myself to be a good "salesman." Any input from someone who has any experience with the company would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Serously, multilevel marketing is a nightmare. I can't stand being near folks who are involved in it.

Typical supplement company (their products are the best, the only ones that offer these special benefits and so on)

Enough said

thanks
