Default What's the verdict on liver?

Hey all,

I know back in the old days liver was thought to be something that was very healthy. Has this changed? Can any of the nutrition gurus here tell me if eating liver should be avoided. The fact that the liver filters all the crap out of your body makes it sound like it should be avoided.

The fitday info looks good to me but am I missing something. Just wondering as I have an excellent meatloaf-type recipe that uses liver and it fantastic!!!

Thanks all.

Verdict: it tastes like crap IMO...

I'm pretty certain Galya eats it a little - she calls it "organ" meat. Yuck!

Ask any 8 year old. I can force myself to have some, and very occasionally enjoy some pate, but as for buy and cooking it: I'm still an 8 year old

I'm not asking about the taste, lol. I'm asking about the health benefits to it.

We eat it, it's high protein, tons of vitamin A, iron... and low calorie, can't beat that; high satiety at least for me.
I don't like it very much, but I was taugh to eat it.
Maybe you want to check that out:

Dr. Willett's Eat Drink and be Healthy says no, not healthy, and I forget why. I can't find my copy right now, bought half a dozen, always giving them away.

I *think* it's pretty good for you because it's super nutrient dense. On the same note if you eat "too much" it can cause issues.

But...but...what about the iron content? I think Galya mentioned it, but I'm pretty sure I heard men, especially us older than 30 types, don't need the extra iron.

If you have a varied diet then you probably don't. I figure most people are lacking in at least a handful of goodies, it's hard to tell. At worse I don't think eating liver once in a while is going to send you into the nutritional abyss. You eat it 3x a day every day...it *might*...at some point.

It's good with a rich brown gravy. Mmm. Don't overcook it.

It's good stuff. Nutrients, protein, etc. As for eating too much of it: Who the hell's gonna eat it more then 2-3 times a week?!?!

I like the taste, but it's one of those foods that gets nasty if eaten TOO often.

I say make your meatloaf and eat up.

I understand that the big problem with liver is that it accumulates the cr*p that industrial agriculture pumps into animals. Using that logic, the liver of younger, smaller animals (chickens, say), might be better than that from bigger, older animals (cows, say).

This reasoning may be simply justifying my own preference; cow liver has never tasted good to me, but I do like chicken livers.
