Default ZMA some questiones

I tried to do a search, but for some reason, no results were found youd think it has been mentioned before..

Anyways, im thinking of buying it, first just to see if it has any affect on me, mainly because i read it can give you better sleep, and i dont sleep very good, which affects my recovery and overall tierdness during the day.

Also, ive seen mainly two kinds. One ZMA, that only contains magnesium, zinc and b6 and one ZMAgenin which contains all of those in addition to "Dioscorea" which is suppose to make it even better. Can someone tell me what the difference is? Also, i noticed in the one that contained Dioscorea, there were much less of the other stuff.

the numbers are for the recommended daily dose for both products
ZMAgenin
Dioscorea 1000 mg

Vitamin B6 4 mg
Zinc 12 mg
Magnesium 170 mg

while the other:
ZMA
Magnesium 300 mg
Sink 20 mg
Vitamin B 6 4,0 mg

I just reacted to the big difference between the one that contained Dioscorea and the one that dident.

Also, anyone else who have had sleep problems and tried ZMA? experiences?

And one of the sites said tests had shown that ZMA increased test levels as much as 30%, thats a pretty high number if you ask me, and im thinking, it cant possible be that much, am i right?

Any responses much appritiated!

Just go with regular ZMA, you need those amounts. And I'm not so sure about the direct testosterone raising properties of ZMA, but as far as helping you sleep longer and deeper, yes it does work, which can obviously improve recovery in it's own right.

One thing I've noticed, don't know if anyone else has ever had this problem, is that I have to cycle ZMA for it to work right. It seems like a take it for 4-6 weeks and it works great, then all of the sudden I have horrible insomnia every couple nights, I stop taking it and that goes away. Then a few weeks later I try it again and the same thing happens, it works for about a month. I have no idea why this happens, but sleep is definitely better on ZMA.

I took ZMA for one month. GREAT sleep(I actually looked forward to sleeping), but no effect on lifting/body comp/test.

I would recomend it as a sleep aid, but not as a T-booster/progress enhancer.

ok thanks. Does anyone know what that magic ingredient in the ZMAgenin really does? they claim it works better that it gives:
a synergic effect that makes the product more effective than conventional ZMA products.

thats translated from their description of it.

I just picked up a bottle of "Cal-Mag-Zinc" thinking I'd kill 3 birds with one stone. Then, I read that calcium inhibits zinc uptake. Did I just completely waste my money? I'm taking them anyway because I hate to throw them away, but if that's a bad combo, then why do companies market it? I know, I know....money! Just gets me mad!

I myself was skeptical but I bought a bottle a couple of weeks ago on hearing about the sleep thing. What do you know! I do sleep much better! Good stuff just for that.

ParanoidAndroid, your profile says you are 17 years old. I doubt any supplement is going to have your boys make test any faster than they are now.

exactly. I doubted that it would boost test, but I had trouble sleeping at the time. I see it as a sleep aid, not a test booster.

How long did it take for you guys to notice the effect? Was it the first night you took the pills, or did it take a while?

BTW:
I eat my last meal at 9:30 pm and go to bed at 11pm. It says you should take them 30 hours before bed, prefferably on an empty stomach. So if i take them 10:30, an hour after my last meal, am i good?

I still very vividly remember my first night on ZMA. I was in college, forgot exactly what I time I went to bed, but I remember sleeping for about 10-11 hours, slept right through my alarm, I must've hit it off without knowing. I woke up and was so stiff I could barely move, I felt more groggy than I'd ever been. I got up, went to the bathroom and my hair was completely matted on one side and I had creases on that side of my face from the pillowcase. I don't think I really knew where I was at the time. I took a shower and woke up a little, and noticed the blankets on my bed were not disturbed at all and there was an impression in the sheets of where I had laid that night, don't think my body moved the entire time. After I woke up a little, I felt very refreshed, and it hardly ever happens like that now, but I still sleep pretty well on the stuff.

As far as the empty stomach, yes it will work better, but you don't have to be completely starved. Depending on the size of the meal, you'd be fine taking it an hour afterward. You can also take it right before you go to bed, it still works, just take it within an hour of bedtime.

An hour after eating is fine -- I usually take it 30 minutes after eating.

In my opinion, no weightlifter should go to bed on an empty stomach.

I tried ZMA for two months and noticed no effect on sleep or performance. But I seem to be the exception here. (I was sleeping fine before I took it, though.)

The testosterone boost ZMA gives is likely due to the zinc, some evidence to support that.

I didnt find it didnt do much for me either other then leave me $20 poorer and not allow me to drink milk before bed. I was more restless during the night if anything, I would wake up every few hours.. Maybe it was unrelated I dont know for sure.

Once I get into a schedual I can sleep all day anyways.

I think you notice the difference if you're particularly in need of one\some\all of what it's giving you. The first week I took it, it worked like a miracle. Ever since I haven't noticed any difference at all (going weeks, to months without taking it).

It's cheap and worth checking out.

A few more points:
  1. I had the food timing backwards. I take the ZMA 45 minutes before bed, then have a protein pudding (whey/casein blend with cottage cheese) 30 minutes later. If you eat anything with calcium before the ZMA, you're just wasting the pills.
  2. Evidence on ZMA actually doing anything significant with hormone levels, anabolism, etc... is very flimsy. It's cheap and worth a try, and zinc/magnesium probably won't hurt you, but don't expect anything huge.
  3. I myself haven't really noticed anything different on ZMA, but again, it's cheap and probably won't hurt. It still bugs me to put money in Victor Conte's pocket, though.

well i eat eggs, then wait an hour, then take the pills. And eggs have calcium. I eat boiled eggs at 9:30, ZMA at 10:30, bed at 11:00. thats how i do it now.
Should i rather take the pills before i eat the eggs?
Or should i find something without calcium to eat at 9:30?

I just purchased some ZMA from bulknutrition.com. I'm going to give it a try because I'm always in need of better quality sleep. Hopefully I don't sleep so sound that I pee the bed!
