Good stuff, Mike. My youngest son has asthma. I have to get him on the fish oil (this should be fun). Thanks.

I'm glad you liked the article. I haven't delved deep into the asthma/fish oil research but it looks promising.

I enjoyed the article Mike.

YES IT DOES!

Thank you for not leaving it right there, but going ahead and giving us your own conclusions on the matter.

Actually not I don't use smart balance anymore. We have it in the fridge incase my wife is doing to spread it on bread but use butter/butter substitute so little that I just go for the real thing.

My favorite was

"I hate it when supplement companies make supplements sound like drugs. It's just dumb. For example, one of the brand names for the drug metformin (used to treat hyperglycemia) is glucophage. There's now a supplement called glucophase. Who are they really trying to fool?"

Supplement names crack me up.

FWIW, I haven't seen much, if any, improvement in my asthma using fish oil. I took six Flameout capsules/day for six weeks. The mood/cognition benefits of fish oil are great, though. Give it a shot and let us know. Anything you can do so that he's not beholden to inhalers etc is a step in the right direction.

He doesn't use inhalers much but he does have problems when he's playing sports. He starts to wheeze a lot when he's done. I don't know if I could get him to take 10 caps a day though.

Followup:

So I mention to my son about what I read in the article. I show him where the fish oil caps are, say that I take 6 a day, and that his may help with his asthma. He gives me that skeptical "yeah right, Dad" look (hey, he's 14, there supposed to know more than me. ). I just say that I wanted to pass this on to him, it's something that may make him feel better.

Come home from work yesterday and he tells me he took 2 of the caps (1 gm EPA/DHA). He say he'll start here and see how he feels from it.

I was shocked. This is the kid that complains when I buy organic foods (I don't know why he does).

Too late for you now, but I put my son's fish oil caps in a bottle labeled "Omega-3 capsules." Sounds less gross and the bottle just gets refilled from the big bottle.

query on fish oil in general: I take it most of you guys use fish oil capsules. Isn't it rather expensive to take 6 of them a day? I haven't really seen much in the way of alternatives outside of eating more fish than I am comfortable with.

6 for me is about $1 per day. That gives me 3 gms EPA/DHA.

here is a little chart I made up to compare costs of fish oils. I made it when I got some advice to stop using generic's and start getting my fish oil from some bigger name companies.

Code:
EPA DHA #of gels Cost EPA/Bottle DHA/Bottle EPA Cost DHA Cost
Super O3 300 200 130 14 39000 26000 0.000358974 0.000538462
N Salmon 180 125 230 12.4 41400 28750 0.000299517 0.000431304
N Fish oil 160 100 240 20.29 38400 24000 0.000528385 0.000845417
N Salmon 180 125 360 23.28 64800 45000 0.000359259 0.000517333
Flameout 880 2200 90 24.99 79200 198000 0.000315530 0.000126212
Most of the ones listed are Carlson products and the prices are from vitacost. I was pretty surprised to see how cheap the flameouts were when broken down like this.

How'd you do that cool chart?

I'm not against eating fish, but isn't it cheaper to eat other proteins and take fish oil? Fish is expensive. Salmon, especially...

Problem with fish for me is that it just isn't that filling, and yeah, its pretty expensive here.

Its just a simple excel spreadsheet, I can email it to ya if you want so you can put in any other brands you use. Just pm me your adress.
