McDonalds 0, Hedghog campaigners 1, Hedgehogs pissed!
A prickly problem solved as hedgehog hazard is spiked

HEDGEHOG campaigners have won their battle against the fast-food giant McDonald's to protect the mammals from the dangers of McFlurry cartons.

McFlurry
Quote:
Making a McFlurry
The method by which American McFlurries are made is quite ingenious from an engineering standpoint. The McCrewmember first takes a a McFlurry cup (Small or Large) and fills it to the top with vanilla soft-serve. He or she snaps a plastic dome-shaped lid onto the cup and then walks over to the McFlurry station and empties a pre-measured portion of the chosen confection into the cup. Finally he or she sticks a McFlurry Spoon in. The McFlurry Spoon is designed with a hollow, 12.5 cm long, 1.5 cm wide square handle made of translucent, heavy-gauge (1 mm thick) plastic. There is no straw functionality in the US version of the utensil, the handle is made hollow only to save material and to allow it to be mounted on the mixer. At the end of the handle is a clip, which attaches onto the rotating axl of the blending machine. The McFlurry-maker engages the mixer while holding the cup, and the spoon acts as a beater, blending the candy pieces into the ice cream. The domed lid ensures none of the McFlurry escapes, and using a disposable mixing utensil means less equipment needs to be washed by the crew at the end of the night.
The Sinister Side of the McFlurry A BBC article dated 10 January 2002 reports that discarded McFlurry containers are actually dangerous to hedgehogs! Apparently the little creatures stick their heads into the dome lids, trying to get a lick of the sugary goodness of McDonald's softserve, but their spines get stuck behind the rim, leaving the hedgehog trapped. Apparently enough hedgehogs have been found dead or dying trapped in this position to raise the ire of The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, who is petitioning McDonald's to change their lid design. The society also notes that McDonald's patrons should dispose of their McFlurry cups in the proper trash receptacles once their contents have been consumed.

I'm sure the obesity rates of the hedgehogs will drop, now, as well. Although, one hedgehog, who asked to remain anonymous, was quoted as saying "A few hogs who can't control themselves ruin it for all of us."
Sonic the Hedgehog declined to comment specifically on this issue, instead responding simply "Let's speed, keed!"

I heard that on the news this morning. Pretty funny, but I admire McDonald's for making that change.

I would also admire them more if they produced a more kid friendly size. My kids beg for these things, but the smallest one is like 650 calories!
I always say no and let them choose two cookies, a cone, a child's size shake, or a sundae (which they never pick). Not all at once. One of these options...
I even say they can get one and split it into two cups, but they refuse to do that.

650 calories? I didn't realize they were that bad. My kids have had those several times. My enforcer moments come at Dairy Queen, when I won't let my older daughter have a medium Blizzard, which is a pig-out for me, much less them.

I once saved a hedgehog whose head was stuck in an empty hair gel jar. Poor thing. It ran off.

LOL - yeah, I noted that too. It's McDonalds' fault, not the pigs who toss the containers onto the ground.

Usually, I'd agree, but garbage just goes to the landfill, which is probably frequented by all sorts of animals, like hedgehogs.
Although, I'd guess that most of these occurances happened when the little guys found them on the ground or in park trashcans.
Remember this issue with the six-pack rings and birds?
That was my whole justification to move to tall boys!

That's the solution, then. McDonald's needs to sell Supersized McFlurries with huge lids that won't trap the little dudes. Supersize to Save the Hedgehogs!

I like the way that man thinks!
Having personally never seen a hedghog in the wild...can't comment on their role on the planet. But I'm more than willing to leave out the plastic rings to kill the GAWD DAMN SEAGULLS!!
