Default Your Diet Super Foods and Cheat Foods

I thought this might be a fun format for everyone to post some info that others will find useful.

My Super Food:
Brown Cow Yogurt (Low Fat or Non fat). It's absolutely delicious, and natural. There is also a regular fat with cream on the top which can't be beat for taste, but is a little high in calories. Get your calcium and acidophilus right here!

Cheat Food:
Cocoa Puffs! I have a box of this stuff in my closet and when I feel the need for something sweet that reminds me of home, I pull out the cocoa puffs. yummmmmmm...

What are your "Super" and "Cheat" Foods?

Don't really have a superfood per se, but I'll share my recipe for my 'Bowl of Muscle' I used to eat for breakfast every morning when bulking in college on a poor mans budget:

3/4c (uncooked) plain oatmeal
1.5 scoops ON chocolate whey
2tbsp Peanut Butter
1 medium banana
2 cups of skim milk

Cook the oatmeal, then stir in whey, pb, and slice banana into bowl. Eat and wash down with milk.

Approx: 850cals, 22g fat, 100g carb (11 fiber), 70g protein

My cheat food(s): Frosted flakes w/ peanut butter, Cracker Barrel pancakes w/ Biscuits and Gravy. Pizza, ribs, burgers, pecan pie, occasionaly Popeye's.

Superfood. HUGE spinach salad, with chicken, walnuts, a variety of cut up veggies and walnut oil and balsamic dressing.

Cheat foods. Whatever my Dad has for his typical meals.

I love a Berry Smoothie in the morning - any berries I can find, 1/2 a banana, 1% milk, vanilla whey, ice, and a touch of vanilla extract. Yumm.

I love Dr. John's London Broil Stew. During triathlon season, I'll make a Risotto with onions, garlic, red peppers, spinach, roasted mushrooms, chicken breast, and some feta cheese. Amazing.

Cheats: Pizza, Beer, Ice Cream, and nice, soft, cookies!

Superfoods:

*Bags of fresh spinach, ready to eat. Convenient extreme nutrition for lunch and adding to omelettes.

*Frozen stir-fry vegetables - This is probably my biggest staple. The frozen veggies don't spoil, they're already chopped and ready to go, and they are a very convenient way to get a decent variety of veggies on a time crunch. I'll even partially cook them in the AM and toss them into a lunch container to eat as part of a cold salad.

*Frozen berries - Less expensive than fresh, big nutrient punch, same deal with avoiding spoilage, and they are great for combining with lowfat dairy. Berries that are still frozen can be chopped up in a food processor when making a smoothie or shake, so no need to add ice.

*Canned salmon - When it plops out of the can, there's no denying that it looks and smells repulsive, but it looks much better in a salmon patty or even mixed with some canola mayo into "salmon salad" for adding to a big spinach and veggie combo. Plus a lot of canned salmon is supposed to be wild, rather than farmed... always a plus.

Cheat foods:

I have a really bad sweet tooth. Ice cream is always a favorite cheat food, as well as one of those obnoxious sundaes with a warm brownie, good vanilla ice cream, and hot fudge. Carrot cake is one of my favorites as well. And a mixed berry pie.

I'm pretty good on the entree side - healthy is usually fine with me, if I don't downright prefer the healthier choices. Chips and salsa or cheese dip at a Mexican restaurant are an easy temptation for me.

Super foods: egg white omelet with spinach, chives and sharp cheddar (or tomato, basil and feta). Spinach salad with roasted chicken chunks, walnuts, roasted pepper slices, vinaigrette. Deerburger chili.

Cheats: That brownie sundae sounds awfully good! I prefer chocolate ice cream on mine, though.

Superfoods: Mostly recipes from here (Johnka's chili, beef and cabbage), steamed spinach, buffalo burgers from Ruggles (buffalo meat with low-fat cheese on a whole wheat bun, with fruit on the side). RedWifey also makes a killer pizza with whole what crust, lean beef, roasted peppers and mushrooms.

Cheat: Also from Ruggles, it's their "Choclate Creme Brulee Cheesecake". You heard right. The top layer is chocolate creme brulee, complete with caramelized top. Bottom layer is cheesecake. Oreo crust. Served a la mode. I've had it twice in the past month, both times in the 3-hour window following a workout, of course.

So would a Big and Tasty at McDonalds, 23, 41, 24 (grams of fat, carb, protein) make an acceptable after exercise/lunch combo. A hambuger a few times a month would be a treat I would enjoy. But I don't want a slippery slope, or to kid myself.

Oh yeah, forgot my sweet cheat foods. Pecan Pie and Cookie's and Cream Ice Cream. I pretty much knew I loved my girlfriend when she made me Pecan Pie, she makes it with oatmeal, it's the greatest thing in the world!

Super Foods: Grilled Veggies like Red and Green Peppers, Zuchini, Eggplant, Red Onions and Jalapeno's topped with Grilled Seasoned Chicken Breast Strips with a healthy serving of Home made salsa and guacamole. You can have a good size portion and it is big on flavor.

Favorite Cheat: Large Cheese, Sausage and Peperoni Special from Zaffiro's (has a very thin crust) and I am not sharing.

Superfood: Spinach.

Cheat: My chocolate peanut butter indulgence shake.

Something I tried recently, but didn't go over too well with my taste:

1cp 1% cottage cheese
3/4 cp blueberries
1/2 scp chocolate casein.

Does cottage cheese melt? I might tried it softened next time.

Greg, have you ever tried Rosatti's of Chicago? Mmmmm...yumm!!!

I think in a couple weeks, I'm going to head to Kopp's and get a small hot fudge sundae, with nuts for some healthy fats.

Superfood: Homemade protein bars. Other than making them and forcing myself not to eat too many, there's no downside, only up. Made another batch of Apple Walnut Squares, tonight.

Cheat: Cereal. Granola or something like Honey Nut Cheerios.

Homemade granola is really easy to make less "cheaty" and very customizable like the protein bars. Splenda in place of the ridiculous amounts of sugar in many pre-packaged granola works pretty well. The downside is that it's still very high calorie and VERY hard to resist.

I'd have to have granola without grains to not be "cheaty" for me, unfortunately. You end up with nuts and dried fruit, neither of which is low in cals.

Yeah, that's why I said "less" cheaty. I haven't made it in a long time, since I try to limit my grains as well.

I have a Rosatti's about a mile away from my house it's OK in a pinch but get yourself over to Zaffiro's on Farwell for a real treat. Kopp's and healthy fat yeah right you might as well order the Lean double cheese burger and fries with that
