Default Hello, Looking for a Good Supplement.

Hello all. I am new here and just joined a Gym by my house. I am looking for a muscle supplement to build muscle. I want something that is safe and that is easy to use. I am not looking to be HUGE just tone.

I am about 15-20 pounds over wieght.
Should I slim down and then start lifting ?

Thanks for your help

Andy

The gym has the best supplement. It's these metal bars you put round plates and lift repeatedly. These work the best.

The second best supplement is eating good food.

Get those two in order and you're good to go.

Did you have a plan when you joined the gym? Have you lifted weights before?

Seriously there is no one supplement that will do what you are asking. The best thing is a good diet and hard work in the gym. Do you have a plan for that?

OldGuy is right, focus on cleaning up your diet and eating better. There isn't any substitute for eating quality foods. See www.johnberardi.com for reference on nutrition. He's also right in recommending weight training. Find a good beginner program that will help you meet your goals. (You have goals written down somewhere, right? If not, that is step one.) There are quite a few sample workouts in the FAQ section of this forum. There are also a lot of good workouts listed in the Training Log section that people are actually doing.

Advice on what type of workout is difficult without knowing your experience level. A lot of trainers will tell you that you should be able to master your own bodyweight before moving on to actual weight training. A couple of great trainers that are on line and have a wealth of experience with beginners is Craig Ballantyne and Alwyn Cosgrove. I'd take a look at their websites. Also, you may want to buy a very popular book written by Alwyn and Lou Schuler (both of whom are contributors to this forum) called New Rules of Lifting. A read it repeatedly.

If you provide a little more details about your goals and your experience level, we can probably provide better guidance.

Jeep - have you read the Adam's diet on line here, and most newbies like the New Rules of Lifting Book. JP has it on his Book Sale Site

Food tends to work pretty well.

Assuming you follow the others' advice, protein powder can make getting enough protein easier. But, it's not necessary. You can just eat your protein sources.

Don't ever say "tone" again! Seriously, though. There is no toning, just dropping the fat and adding or keeping the muscle. Toning is just a buzz word that gets people all stirred up. It seems to be a word designed for women to use to indicate the desire to not look to muscular.

Start lifting now. Lifting weights is far superior to any other method of slimming down. Especially if you WANT muscles. Slim down without lifting and what muscle you have... Bye, bye!

Food
heavy weights
protein powder if you can't get all yer protein via whole food
daily multivitamin....its insurance to make sure you get all yer vitamins
fish oil caps
creatine

pretty much in that order of 'necessity/helpfulness'

The minumum suppliments I would recommend, because people don't get enough of it, is fish oil and a mult-vit.

Everything else can be handled by food. Even a multi-vit can be discarded if you eat right.
