Default PRE workout meal

so, ive learned that if you workout in the evening, you should base your meals in the beginning of the day on Protein and Fat and after workout, protein and carbs. BUT is the meal you have just before you workout an exception to the P+F? It just seems logical to me that you need carbs before you workout, since you need alot of energy.
i ask both for weight training and for my jiujitsu class (which is cardio).

I ask this question because i i ran low on carbs during my jiujitsu session just now, when i got home my tshirt had a strong smell of amonia (from what i learned thats due to the body starting to burn protein, and that you need more carbs)

I think Berardi says you can have carbs right before you work out.

what I do is I blend oats and whey in a blender and drink it 5 to 10 minutes before I go to the gym. It works fine for me-- I have plenty of energy.

I have only been eating around 100 carbs a day and I haven't noticed a drop off in energy before I workout.

I've been eating this way for about a week and have lifted twice, ridden a few times and ran once.

I'll keep you posted on how it effects me. I think LD might be eating in the same vein right now as well.

See I thought exactly the opposite after reading his Massive Eating-Reloaded article at T-nation. I'm going to have to go check again; but I have been eating P+F meals preWO. After the workout is time for the carbies.

"To give you an example, a protein/carbohydrate supplement (like Biotest’s Surge) ingested immediately prior to exercise (or sipped during exercise) can actually increase skeletal muscle blood flow. Since this drink not only enhances blood flow but stocks that blood up with amino acids and glucose, the protein balance of the muscle will be shifted toward the positive and glycogen depletion will be significantly reduced. In addition, those amino acids and glucose units, independent of their effects on muscle protein and glycogen status, can also lead to a decrease in cortisol concentrations and improve the overall immune response (part of the acute phase response listed above and described in detail in the Precision Nutrition article)."

What I meant was IMMEDIATlLY before, like right before you walk into the gym. I agree with you that the last large meal Pre-workout should be P+F

Berardi also suggests a diluted P+C drink during training as well...which is alluded to a little in Paranoid's quote.

So if during is more convenient than immediately before...do it!

yeah I usually work out in the morning so I'll wake up and have a P+F meal and then head to the gym a couple hours later. During the WO I'll drink a 1/2 serving of Surge and then PWO another serving.

When I'm using Surge (or the homemade version) I will do this:

PreWorkout - 1/4 serving (make up 1/2 a serving and just drink 1/2)
Workout - Refill shaker with water so the other 1/4 serving is 2x dilute
Postworkout - 1/2 serving
45-60min later - whole food

If i don't eat again within 45-60 minutes my blood sugar levels usually come crashing down due to the huge insulin spike to more (slower acting) carbs are necessary (protein too of course)

This is what I do, too.

Now that you're saying this, I'm having a duh moment. I get absolutely starving 30-45 minutes after my PWO drink, but I didn't when I was low carbing it and had protein only as a PWO drink. Blood sugar crash. duh.

This is also what I do. Except I can't afford that much Surge doing HFT so I usually have my own mixes.
