I need to go to the Farmer's Market and buy some cheaper ones, because I can eat a ton of them! I have a wild female vine in a tree behind my house that produces a lot of fruit, but it's so high up in the tree that I'm not willing to risk my life for them. Plus the few that have fallen from the vine were not quite as good as the larger cultivated ones. My neighbors have a vineyard - I should get to know them!!

P.S. Do you eat the skins? I'm a skin-eater.

If your vine is close to a relatively sunny spot, try doing what my neighbor did - He built a simple arbor and waited until the end of the season to cut a couple of vines about 20' up the tree. He trained the loose vines on the arbor and now enjoys grapes within reach!

Unfortunately, it's very shady around this vine. The fruits are kind of mediocre anyway. What I need to do is build a couple of trellises in some of my limited sunny area and plant a good purple and a good bronze. I was using the spot for vegetables, but I find that vegetable gardening takes up more time than I am willing to devote. I think a couple of muscadine vines plus a smaller area for a few veggie plants would be perfect.

Muscadines and scuppernongs are supposed to be very high is resveratrol, especially the skins. A great reason to eat them and especially to eat the tart skins. I can't believe people spit the skins out - that's the best part!

I've been thinking about doing the same thing since our vines are all in the wooded part of the yard and too distant from the sunny areas to follow my neighbor's lead. I'll probably build an arbor and put a bench under it so that I can pick my grapes while in the shade and then sit down to eat most of them right there.

I've always been a skin spitter since that was the way I was introduced to eating southern grapes when I moved to NC over 30 years ago. I never really thought about eating the skins before - I'll have to give it a try.

I feel the same way about vegetable gardens. I've started one a number of years and I invariably end up mowing it down in late July / early August because I'm tired of dealing with it.

Good for me or not, I spit out the skins! :p

Just bite it and suck out the sweet part, and throw away that tart skin! They are really, really sweet this year too. Delicious!
