Diet, Nutrition and SupplementationPost here for supplement reviews or nutritional advice. If you're trying to get "ripped abz" THIS is where you should be.
Granted, some of my food is great tasting. I love it. Some of my food is purely functional.
Take the "supershake." I've had a few supershakes that were pretty good. But, put that shake in front of virtually anybody who's not reading this right now and listen for the wretching sounds. Stand back, so you don't get any on your shoes!
Pretty much any food that's not a "concoction" is good and tasty. Stir fries without (or with less (or with brown)) rice. "Special" mayonaise in your tuna. etc. etc.
Last weekend I made some protein bars. Some were good, some weren't. I even wrapped up and ate the bad ones. This morning, I made a supershake that was a super mistake! Did I toss it? No.
In one sense, this is good. Food is fuel for me. I eat alone, typically. So, it's not like I have to make the food good for my date, wife, kids, etc.
How do you feel about this? How has your food or views on food changed since you picked up this healthier lifestyle?
I think without question our taste buds change with the new foods you eat. Some things people look at and think your nuts.
I have found few people who think Peanut butter and Oatmeal is a good idea. For me it's like junkfood though.
I don't enjoy eating things I don't like the taste of. I won't take flax oil because I find it absolutely awful no matter how beneficial it might be.
If however I was in expriment mode and trying new things, it would have to be pretty bad for me not to eat it.
So I won't go out and buy things that taste like ass no matter how good they may be, but I would probably eat em if I made em.
Og.

I really understand where you are coming from Roland.
Mine have changed radically. Still haven't perfected what i need. Its hard to find the right eating plan on a budget but most/all my meals are clean.
I haven't had anything alcholic in about 2 year. Don't like it and it isn't good for you so why bother. Its funny when around mates they don't understand, one actually thought it was because i didn't want to have to say i had a drink at one of my AA meetings and just wouldn't understand that i have a healthy lifestyle.
I don't go out partying because A) the whole atmosphere doesn't appeal to me and B) i like and need sleep.
Will have to say that i CAN'T STAND any and all supershakes. Tried a few from Precision nutrition and wow they suck. But strangely enough i finished most of them (nearly threw up a few as well).
My disclaimer - I think the vast majority of canned diets are bogus HOWEVER, LD - I bought the South Beach Diet Quick & Easy cookbook & it has some pretty good high protein meals that are healthy. I cook for myself & my husband - if it doesn't taste good, he won't eat it no matter how healthy it is.
For me, I definitely eat food that is good for me and my taste buds have changed. Breaded & fried anything makes me feel awful. Sweet desserts give me a headache.
I do "need" one small piece of very good dark chocolate after dinner every day. I use my gender and hormonal status as an excuse.
I'm right there with you LD. If I make it and it's not great, I'll still eat it (aside from some hockey puck protein bars I've made :p)
I also find that my taste for food has changed. Without all the extra grease and goop and preservatives and additives, I've found a new appreciation of how the food actually tastes, fresh. For example chicken out of a bag (used at fast food or some chain restaurants) tastes horrible. That processed taste really gets to me now.
PS Dogmama, I'm right there with you on the very good dark chocolate. Besides, it's good for us
Yeah, that SBD cookbook is pretty good. I had one, loaned it, never got it back.
Now, I'm not saying that I specifically eat food that's not tasty. But, in the old days, an experiment gone bad would go in the trash. Now, I still eat it and try again the next time (unless it's for the family).
I understand what you mean, LD, but I'm trying to sort it out for myself.
When I make something for myself, I usually eat it, no matter the taste, unless it's so absolutely vile it's inedible. Those instances are very few. But I'll also admit that I hate the idea of throwing food away, and I'm too cheap to do that very frequently.
My tastes, though, definitely have changed. I eat FAR more veggies now than before, and now I actually LIKE eating my raw carrots and tomatoes without salt. I don't put sugar in my coffee any more, or on fruit. Last week we had a 40th birthday party at work, which included fried chicken along with the other potluck stuff, and a piece of cake. A few years ago it wouldn't have been anything unusual for me to eat that junk. But I felt all afternoon like I'd swallowed a couple pounds of lead.
So when I think about your question, I can't say if it's the change in my tastes that dictate eating the experiments gone awry, or if it's my own cheapness. Probably a little of both!

But I felt all afternoon like I'd swallowed a couple pounds of lead.
I know the feeling. This was a birthday weekend also which meant dinners out - why can't reputable eating establishments serve veggies that aren't limp as a dish rag?
I think simple food from quality ingredients, simply prepared is the best. One of my favorite quick dishes:
Chicken breasts (can be frozen)
Your choice of veggies (bell peppers, zucchini, tomatoes are in season now)
Grated mozorella cheese (or whatever you have on hand - I prefer a milder cheese)
Pasta sauce (or diced canned tomatoes with a little Italian seasoning)
Bake chicken breasts, in pasta sauce, covered in 350 degree oven until almost done. Add veggies the last ~15 minutes, depending on how crunchy you like them. Sprinkle cheese on top (can be omitted) the last few minutes.
While it is baking, make a salad of your choice & you're done.
LD,
I think the reason you don't throw away shakes that are bad may be the same as mine. I'm cheap. I hate letting food go to waste.
Also I do think my taste buds have changed in the last few years. I know I couldn't eat cottage cheese before, but now I eat it like ice cream.

Hey, Dark Chocolate is no gender thing, I love my chocolate, it's one of the treats I allow myself, Trader Joe's sells this 71% Cocoa chocolate that is simply amazing, most people would think it is too bitter, but I hate milk chocolate, so it's perfect for me. I'll take my one or two pieces of that over a snickers bar (my old high school snack) anyday now.
Hey Diamond - thought I was the only one who admitted to liking chocolate candy. I put a recipe on site for sugarless a week ago. And I just bought some Dove and Hershey dark chocolate pieces. Decided to accompany my 40 gram whey protein with 20 grams of carbs. Anybody have recommendations on timing. I take candy pieces on the way to gym, and whey immediately after workout - in lockerroom and before intervals. Rob
LD - I find that things that taste really really good to me...my kids and wife make horrible faces when I coax them to try a taste. My taste has definitely changed. I think there is something psychological about it too. When I know something is really good for me...it tastes better to me. Or at least, I enjoy it more. I'm more apt to endure a little bit of strange texture when I know it's right on my diet. Drinking a shake with raw oatmeal blended up can be a little different but doesn't bother me. I don't think I would have done that a couple of years ago.
I pound my shakes back to, whether they are tastey or gross (though I stick with Nitrean and ON, so they aren't ever gross anymore).
And like you 'food is fuel' is my mantra to keep me from eating a lot of the crap that's available to me (people always bring in junk food to share w/ the office)
I had no excuse to have ever let myself get fat, because I have always liked a wide array of foods. I think one big mistake I made was buying into the high carb/low fat mantra of the 1990's, but overall it was quantity that was the problem and lack of exercise.
I can't think of anything that I eat regularly that I dislike. Most stuff I like a lot. I could eat stir-fried veggies just about every night with a changeup of seasonings and the lean meat or chicken I add to the mix.
I'm not much of a shake person, as I prefer to eat solid foods, since shakes don't really satisfy me. If I'm going the shake-like route, it's going to be more of a smoothie that I can eat like ice cream. A dessert substitute. When I use whey, it's almost always mixed in with endurance drink powder post-workout or during/post run.
I rarely throw anything away without eating it, though. I made some protein bars last night that were pretty much a flop as far as the egg white/whey base... but I plan to eat them anyway!
If you like to cook, like me, it gives you great pleasure to take a sinful recipe and make some healthy improvements and still have it turn out well. Interestingly, my 6-year-old son often will eat whole grain blend pasta and other "health foods" without comment. It certainly pays to try to introduce some healthy habits early. (I've had my share of flops in the kitchen too).
As long as it's not canned and/or prepackaged, frozen or has a shelf life like that of a Twinkie: I'll be eating it.
Hell, I've even tried blowfish and Durian fruit. Heh, my current hero is Anthony Bourdain, cuz he eats lots of food that would make most people uneasy - but at least it's food. And I don't get that "healthy food" or "junk food" labels. Firstly, if it's food - more than likely, it's going to healthy. And "junk food"? How can junk be food? It's just junk.
I'm also not much of a shake person. Now, Ko will make himself a shake since he can use the extra calories that a shake supplies - I don't need 'em so much.
On a sidenote - someone (on another website board) is trying to convince me that pork rinds are okay as a snack; that they're better than beef jerky. Wacky.
I just finished some pork rinds. Delicious. Very salty, though. Are they healthier than jerky? Depends. If you're not afraid of saturated fat, and you're looking to eat fat, anyway... Most of the fat in pork isn't saturated, anyway, but still.
Beware the weird bbq, spicy, and lime flavored ones, they are sometimes filled with sketchy ingredients. One was even cooked in soybean oil! Proper rinds are cooked in their own fat, then salted.
Isn't Anthony Bourdain the guy that eats the whole animal. Gross.
Durian smells like rotting flesh. I've had it, too.
