Default The Big Supplement Company Lie

I made the following post in my blog yesterday:

"I just saw some new pictures of long time standing Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman and I had to laugh. He is currently under contract with supplement company BSN and they take (BSN) tons of credit for his massive size and condition. Like Ronnie wasn’t huge before NO-Xplode - c’mon.

This card is too often played by supplement companies. I remember when Lee Priest was signed to MuscleTech. They had tons of ads running that claimed hydroxycut was responsible to Lee’s amazing off season to contest transformation (50+ pounds lost). C’mon, Lee has been going from a Kentucky Chicken eating fat ass (he loves KFC) to a ripped to shreds IFBB Pro for years! Hydroxycut has nothing to do with it.

The successful supplement companies are extremely good marketers and they often push the envelop too far with their claims about how their products help professionals reach their peak condition.

Be a skeptical consumer. Ask questions (and not to the guy that works at GNC, read this for more on that). If you need to shoot me an email at mike@muscleandcuts.com and ask me. There is no quick fix, so don’t let an ad in a magazine convince you otherwise."

Today I came across this in an interview with Mr. Coleman:

"[ Q ] Describe your diet and supplementation program. Again, did you make any changes compared to last year?
Cyntha-6

[ A ] I can share this with you. I'm using SYNTHA-6 right up to the show. BSN hit a home run with this stuff. It's the only protein I've ever been able to use four to five times a day without feeling stuffed or bloated. I love it. The strawberry flavor tastes like strawberry milk. It's amazing.

Other than SYNTHA-6, I'm taking plenty of CELLMASS to keep my strength and power through the roof, N.O.-XPLODE before I train, and NITRIX all day long. I go through those big 360 bottles of NITRIX like crazy 'cause I rely on it so much to stay vascular.

Like my training program, as far as the details of my diet program go, I won't talk about it. Trade secrets, you know? "

Trade secrets? Please...and people wonder why bodybuilding can't crack into the mainstream. Listen to the "embassador" for the sport! I've listened to interviews with Jay Cutler and at least he gives real answers without saying Muscle Tech every other word.

Yeah, both companies are pretty rediculous despite a lot of people liking BSN.

Anyone that knows anything about real lifting, knows that these companies are jokes. I feel sorry for the casual person who sees the ads and spends their hard earned money on crap.
Case in point, at anytime you can walk into a supplement/fat burner aisle at a Wal-mart and see people who are thinking that buying the latest fad will be the be all, end all. It's so sad. I just want to tell them "There is no magic pill" *sigh*

Recently, I busted my step-daughter at Costco reading labels from these bottles. And she is a paramedic & a nurse in training who should know better. Sloth is pervasive and advertising is powerful in our society. No wonder these companies make money.

I like to read supp labels, mainly to see if there's anything useful in it at all, or how it stacks up to what I'm currently taking.

I don't thiink the majority, here, buy into the crap.

There are a couple of NO2 type users (and I tried Hot Rox, of course), the majority of the reponses to 'what sups should I take?" are along the lines of get your diet and training in order before worrying about supplements.

For the most part, people here have their heads on right. Some of us get a little down and frustrated about progress and try something just to see (green tea, Hot Rox, prozac, etc.).

Screw prozac. I want the hard stuff. Give me valium. :p

It's been proved that real food has much more value than a pill. But some things need to be supplemented - I mean - how much fish can you eat? Good quality supplements can enhance a diet.

Think of the word "supplement." If they were supposed to make up for a bad diet, they'd be called "substitutes."

I worked for Andrew Weil for a few years, been to his house & observed his lifestyle. His diet is based on whole foods, vegetables that he grows and organics. He uses supplements as an adjunct for health, not a substitute for food. (BTW, he has a walk in refrigerator.)

Jay Cutler really did gain 50lbs of muscle by eating Nitro-Tech bars though, it's true, I read it in a 6 page special report in FLEX.

Yeah those "special reports" don't seem so special when there are in 5 magazines each month, every month.

Certainly you are not suggesting that a five page report in Flex would be misleading, are you?:p

When will people realize that there are no quick fixes? "30 days to 10 pounds of weight loss" - OK - and then what? Pig out until you've regained the weight plus some. Rinse & repeat. And screw up your metabolism big time.

I'm constantly having women come into my office complaining about the fat on their upper arms, "Can't you show me your arm exercise? I need to lose 5 pounds of fat from my arms." When I talk about diet and whole body exercises, their eyes glaze over & they leave.

Oh well. At least I get more work done.

Once again BFG makes a blanket statement about the "majority" of the people on this forum. I suspect that most of the regular posters would probably take exception to this remark. One thing you'll have to explain to me is why you continue to frequent this forum if everyone here is doing things incorrectly according to you? Don't you get tired of arguing with people that are obviously doing things incorrectly while you are the only one doing the right things? You are the classic example of a person that is so narrow minded and arrogant to think that everyone else is against them and it must be a problem with everyone else. When you should probably take a long look in the mirror.

To put it frankly, I think this is a load of crap to say that the majority of the people on this forum are dumb enough to believe the hype that these supp companies are advertising. As Lost Dog said, I think the majority of the people that frequent this site are relatively intelligent and are training and eating the "right way". But for some reason you have a completely different impression of the posters here. I guess I take exception to that.

I'm sick and freakin tired to you coming on this site and saying "you're doing things the wrong way" or "there's no way that will work" and "I did it this way and that's the best way" and implying that the rest of us are idiots and you're the only one who's got a clue. What a load of shit!

Life is way to short to continue to put people down on some internet fitness forum. How about supporting other ideas and being positive for once? Why don't you give that a try for a while and see what kind of results you get, huh?

This is a classic example of problems with our society. No one wants to work hard for results. Everyone wants a quick, easy fix. That's why when people ask me how I lost weight, I tell them they don't want to know.

I've always said people know how to get healthy - eat right and exercise. But they don't have the mental apptitude to actually do it. They spend much more time and effort looking for a short cut.

It's a very discouraging issue. Pathetic...

Easy tiger!

I have re read what I typed as It was meant to read as "majority of people are focussed on training, and still people buy into the crap". ie not all where using BUT majority were focussed. What Im saying is that even the educated/well read buy into wish pills so how can you expect the masses with no knowledge whatsoever to be any different

And as for being supportive when someone is switched on and using sound reason and not wish pills and gimmicks I support all the way. Especialy when they take on board pthers suggestions without a blanket whitewash. I have never said other ways would not work and you know that, I may have skepticism as to the results that certain plans/diets or whatever promise but there are 1001 ways to skin a cat. If you chose to buy into it all well and good it doesnt mean to say we all have to but I never discount a thing. Fact is though there aint no shortcuts to results its hard work that gets you there; I just prefer the most efficient approach.

Now Im sorry if my post offended you but jump of the personal criticism train. I couldnt give a monkeys fuck if you are sick and tired of my typing, I havent said your way wouldnt work and I havent rubished your or anyones ideas. As always I say Id keep an open mind which is more than I can say I have had offered in return.

I didnt atack you personaly at all so take a chill pill and I hope you feel better for your little rant.

Absolutely uncalled for. The man has different ideas about fitness and gets railed for it? He shouldn't have said "majority." Big deal.

He's made it very clear that there are a lot of ways to get the same result. You pick the one that works best with your personality and/or lifestyle.

I would read your last paragraph, in the quote above, again. It's actually good advice.
