Default Your Acid/Base Balance

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I think it is a very important to consider your acid/base balance when designing your diet. Loren Cordain wrote about this extensively in "The Paleo Diet" and John Berardi has an interesting article on this subject on his site.

I read about that in The Paleo Diet, but my reaction was more of a, "oh no, not something ELSE to worry about!" I try to eat a lot of fruits and veggies and give those major priority over grain foods. Hopefully that is enough.

I noted that the very popular OATS are one of the worst offenders on the acidic team!

I've read the Paleo Diet for Athletes ,which I think is more relavent to most of us here. It also covers acid/base balance. I'll admit I haven't read the original one, just the Athletes version.

The Athletes version covers the times when eating starchy carbs are actually to your advantage. When I skimmed Paleo Diet, Cordain came across as anti-grain, because cavemen didn't eat them. This second book seemed different, but again, I never fully read the first one.

Has anyone read both?

Here's an interview with Berardi AND Cordain. It's entertaining, particularly near the end. Berardi and Cordain have a little chat
